Gold Gearing Up for Another Solid Run? ETFs to Ride the Trend

Gold's rally shows no signs of fading. With rate cuts looming, dollar weakening and bullish forecasts in sight, here are the ETFs that investors can use to ride the trend.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Marks called gold a “lackluster investment” despite the yellow metal’s bull run in 2025.</li><li>So far in 2025, the S&amp;P 500 has gained 16%, while spot gold prices have risen 65%.&nbsp;</li><li>Marks acknowledged that those who invested in gold this year have made a “ton of money,” but said that the yellow metal’s annual returns since 2010 have been relatively lower compared to the S&amp;P 500’s.</li></ul>Howard Marks, co-chairman of Oaktree Capital Management, reiterated his antithetical views on gold and Bitcoin (BTC) once again, stating that investing in these assets is not possible analytically.Known for his value-investing style and emphasis on avoiding losses, Marks called gold a “lackluster investment” despite the yellow metal’s bull run in 2025, during a recent&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmHk_lqv_6s">episode</a> of the “We Study Billionaires” podcast.“You can invest in it out of superstition, you can invest in it because you think it will go up, you can invest in it because you think it will be a store of value, because it always has. But you can’t invest in it analytically on the basis of something called intrinsic value,” Marks said.So far in 2025, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/SPX">S&amp;P 500</a> has gained 16%, while spot gold prices have risen 65%.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/bitcoin">Bitcoin prices</a> have declined by over 7% year-to-date.Analysts at ING Think expect gold prices to reach $4,400 per troy ounce by the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2026, implying an upside of 2% from the current price of $4,295.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Intrinsic Value</h2>The Oaktree co-founder, also known for his investment memos, voiced his opposition to Bitcoin, diamonds, and paintings, apart from gold, for lacking intrinsic value.“If I say to a gold fan or a Bitcoin fan, well, what do you think the price will be in a year, how do they reach that conclusion? What do they base it on, if they don’t have cash flow to base that conclusion on?” Marks asked.Intrinsic value is the true underlying worth of an asset based on fundamentals like cash flow, assets, and earnings, independent of its current market price.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Gold Versus Equities</h2>While Marks acknowledged that those who invested in gold this year have made a “ton of money,” he pulled up historical returns of the yellow metal and compared it with the annual returns of U.S. equities.“If you bought gold at the end of 2010, I think you’ve had a 7.7% annual return since then. Expectations of softer monetary policy also bolster precious metals by lowering borrowing costs and weighing on the U.S. dollar. Lower interest rates tend to favour non-yielding assets such as gold.<h2 class="st-heading-2">U.S. Macro Data</h2>Recent U.S. economic data have offered mixed cues. The core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) inflation gauge met expectations, consumer sentiment improved, and jobless claims fell to over three-year lows, even as private payrolls recorded their sharpest drop in more than two years.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Silver Close To Record Highs</h2>Silver, meanwhile, extended its strong run. Spot prices (XAG/USD) rose 0.7% to $58.55 per ounce, hovering just below the record high of $59.34 reached last week.&nbsp;Analysts attribute the surge in prices to tight physical supply and depleted inventories due to high demand from industrial sectors. Silver has nearly doubled in value this year, outpacing gold’s almost 60% gains.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Greenback And Copper Watch</h2>The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) was down marginally at 99.05. The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/DXY">DXY</a> measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six key currencies: the euro, Japanese yen, pound sterling, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona, and Swiss franc.Copper prices have also seen substantial gains this year, with the metal hitting a record high of $11,771 per ton on the London Metal Exchange on Monday. It was down 1.2% on Tuesday.Meanwhile, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/GLD">SPDR Gold Shares ETF</a> (GLD) was up 0.31% at the time of writing, while the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/IAU">iShares Gold Trust ETF</a> (IAU) gained 0.28%. Here’s How Gold Is Performing Ahead Of Fed Rate Decision Tomorrow

Gold prices advanced on Tuesday morning ahead of the Fed's rate decision on Wednesday, amidst a widely anticipated 25-basis-point rate cut.   

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>BIS noted that both the S&amp;P 500 and gold prices have surged in “lockstep” throughout the recent market rally.</li><li>Since dipping in April this year after President Donald Trump announced the “Liberation Day” tariffs, the S&amp;P 500 has surged 38% so far, while gold prices have gained more than 41%.</li><li>On Monday, Oppenheimer’s Chief Investment Strategist John Stoltzfus said he expects the S&amp;P 500 to reach 8,100 by the end of 2026.</li></ul>The S&amp;P 500 index and gold are at risk of being in a bubble, according to the latest&nbsp;report by the Bank of International Settlements (BIS).The BIS pointed out that the S&amp;P 500 index and gold have exhibited “explosive behavior” jointly for the first time in the last 50 years.“A widely used statistical test to detect the explosiveness of a price process suggests that both the S&amp;P 500 and the price of gold have entered explosive territory in recent months,” BIS said.It noted that explosive prices are associated with low future returns.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Surging In Lockstep</h2>BIS noted that both the S&amp;P 500 and gold prices have surged in “lockstep” throughout the recent market rally.Since dipping in April this year after President Donald Trump announced the “Liberation Day” tariffs, the S&amp;P 500 index has surged 38% so far. In the same period, spot gold prices have gained more than 41%.Earlier on Monday, Oppenheimer’s Chief Investment Strategist John Stoltzfus said he expects the S&amp;P 500 to reach 8,100 by the end of 2026, up 18% from current levels.<h2 class="st-heading-2">BIS’ Warning</h2>The central bank body warned that a sharp, swift correction typically follows a bubble burst, adding that the growing influence of retail investors is a sign of a developing bubble.“Historically, the prices of U.S. equities and gold have breached the explosive behaviour threshold at different times. This was often followed by a significant correction, such as in 1980 for gold (after having surged during the Great Inflation) and the burst of the dotcom bubble for US equities,” it stated in a report.Analysts at ING Think stated in a note on Monday that they expect the yellow metal to continue to shine in 2026. They expect gold prices to average $4,325 per troy ounce in 2026, implying an upside of more than 3% from current levels.Meanwhile, U.S. equities edged lower in Monday’s opening trade. S&P 500, Gold At Risk Of Being In A Bubble After Flashing 'Explosive’ Price Patterns For First Time In Five Decades, Says BIS

While there have been two separate pullbacks over the past month, spot prices continue to remain well above the 50-day moving average (50-DMA).At the time of writing, silver futures maturing in March 2026 delivery traded 0.1% lower at $58.64.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Pullback On The Cards?</h2>While silver may continue to outperform, its price action remains volatile, and overbought conditions pose a short-term risk for bullish positions, veteran commodities expert and Head of Commodity Strategy for Saxo Bank, Ole Hansen, wrote in a post on X on Wednesday.<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/Ole_S_Hansen/status/1996127661463068983"><img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Ole_Hansen_png_851796fbbc.webp" alt="Ole Hansen.png"></a>In a report for Saxo Bank, Hansen stated that, as London vault inventories are depleted to meet strong silver demand from the U.S. and India, lease rates have jumped, tightening conditions and adding pressure on traders.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Gold Remains Steady</h2>Spot gold price (XAU/USD) was down marginally at $4,200.3 per ounce on Wednesday morning. The pair has benefited from a weaker dollar and rising expectations of a rate cut this month. Silver Extends Blistering Rally With Yet Another Record High

On Friday, spot silver climbed past $55 an ounce for the first time, buoyed by a weak dollar as traders bet on a potential interest rate cut on December 10. The rally continued on Monday with silver climbing above $58 per ounce.

The XAG/USD pair rose to an all-time high of $58.95 an ounce on Wednesday before paring some of the gains.

At the time of writing, it was up more than 3.1%. While there have been two separate pullbacks over the past month, spot prices continue to remain well above the 50-day moving average (50-DMA).Silver prices are on track for a sixth straight session of gains. On Friday, the XAG/USD pair climbed past $55 an ounce for the first time, buoyed by a weak dollar as traders increased their bets on a potential Fed rate cut on December 10. Recent comments from top Fed officials, along with weaker post-shutdown economic data, have reinforced market expectations for a rate cut next month.Data from the CME FedWatch tool showed an 87.4% probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut at the December 10 meeting. A week back, the figure stood slightly lower at 84.4%.Silver futures maturing in March 2026 delivery climbed 1.4%, on track to gain for a seventh straight session.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Physical Silver Supply Challenges</h2>According to veteran commodities expert and Head of Commodity Strategy for Saxo Bank, Ole Hansen, the current surge can be traced to a ‘historic tightening’ that began in London in October, the world’s primary hub for physical silver trading.In a Saxo Bank report on Monday, Hansen noted that London vaults had steadily depleted in recent months as the metal shipped out to meet strong demand from the U.S. and India. This has led to a sharp decline in “free-float” inventory, in which the metal is not tied to exchange-traded funds (ETFs), leases, or industrial contracts. As availability decreased, the cost of borrowing, known as the lease rate, jumped sharply, putting pressure on traders.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Gold And The Greenback</h2>Spot gold was up 0.5% at $4,237.5 per ounce on Monday, while gold futures for February 2026 delivery rose around 0.4%. The metal is trading well above its 50-DMA.On the other hand, the dollar slid yet again, with the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) falling back to its 50-DMA for the first time since October 17.&nbsp;It has declined in five of the last six sessions. The problem was caused by a cooling issue at a CyrusOne data centre in the Chicago area.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Fed Rate Cut Hopes</h2>Speculation about a potential Fed rate cut on December 10 has driven up sentiment for precious metals such as gold and silver.&nbsp;Earlier today, spot silver (XAG/USD) hit a<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/spot-silver-trades-near-all-time-highs-as-rate-cut-expectations-rise/cL5a2ZrRELX">&nbsp;fresh high</a> of $55.86 per ounce, at the time of writing, surpassing the previous record of about $54.50 set on October 17.According to data from the CME FedWatch tool, there is an 86.9% probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut at the December 10 meeting. A week back, the figure stood at 71%.Historically, periods of economic or political uncertainty have driven investors toward safe-haven assets such as gold and silver. Expectations of easier monetary policy also tend to boost precious metals by lowering borrowing costs and weakening the dollar.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Investors Remain Bullish</h2>According to a Goldman Sachs survey, as reported by CNBC on Friday, many investors believe the rally is far from over. In a poll of more than 900 institutional clients, 36% expect gold to top $5,000 per ounce by the end of 2026, while another 33% see it landing between $4,500 and $5,000.Overall, more than 70% of respondents anticipate higher prices next year, with only a small minority expecting a pullback to the $3,500 to $4,000 range.Prices have already jumped by more than 60% year-to-date, breaking above the $4,000 mark for the first time on October 8.Brokerages remain bullish, too. Earlier this month, UBS lifted its mid-2026 upside target for gold to $4,900 per ounce from $4,700, saying the forces behind this year’s rally remain intact heading into next year.
