Its latest quarter delivered another stunner, with remaining performance obligations (RPO) soaring 433% to a colossal $523.3 billion. That’s future revenue locked in.And these aren’t nebulous contracts. Larry Ellison has heavyweight names — Meta and Nvidia — on the hook. Still, with Wall Street growing wary of circular AI-era deals, investors may squint at numbers this big.But why the investor jitters? Was a roughly $100 million revenue miss really enough to sour sentiment, or was it simply the spark that ignited deeper concerns?<h2 class="st-heading-2">How Oracle Earns Revenue</h2>Austin, Texas-based Oracle derived roughly half of its fiscal year 2026 second-quarter revenue from its cloud business, with software and services making up 37% and 9%, respectively. Hardware contributed a measly $776 million to the $16.06 billion total.The $8 billion in cloud revenue Oracle earned in Q2 is split evenly between cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and cloud application or SaaS. The former unit comprises a host of enterprise-grade cloud services, including compute, storage, networking, platform-as-a-service (PaaS) services for databases, analytics, etc.On the earnings call, Principal Financial Officer Douglas Kehring said cloud infrastructure revenue jumped 66% year over year (YoY), with GPU-related revenue outperforming with a 177% growth clip, according to a transcript provided by Koyfin.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Red Flag #1: Soaring RPO&nbsp;</h2>RPO, a metric that includes invoiced but not earned (deferred revenue), and contracted but not yet invoiced (backlog), has seen a stratospheric climb since Oracle’s fiscal first quarter.&nbsp;<img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Oracles_RPO_Surge_png_dd3311f4c8.webp" alt="Oracles_RPO_Surge.png">Source: Fiscal.aiOracle’s dependence on a small group of major customers—a classic case of customer concentration risk—continues to cast a shadow over its outlook. Its high-profile alliance with OpenAI has added to that scrutiny. In late September, OpenAI said the late-July agreement to build up to 4.5 GW of capacity amounts to more than $300 billion over five years. The deal falls under the broader, private “Stargate” AI-infrastructure initiative announced by the Trump administration with significant fanfare shortly after the president’s inauguration in January.The latest earnings report didn’t break out how much of that $523.3 billion in RPO will convert to revenue in the next 12 months. On the call, Kehring noted a 40% growth in 12-month RPO, versus 25% in Q1 and 21% a year ago — a far cry from the 433% surge in total RPO that Oracle highlighted, lending some credibility to those critics who pan it as a ‘Shell Game.’ Adding to the uncertainty is OpenAI’s fragile financial footing. According to internal documents cited by the Wall Street Journal last month, the Sam Altman-led ChatGPT maker&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/openai-anthropic-profitability-e9f5bcd6">expects</a> to rack up $74 billion in losses in 2028 as computing costs soar. Whether a loss-making OpenAI can ultimately meet its financial commitments to Oracle has become the central question.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Red Flag #2: Negative Free Cash Flow</h2>Oracle generated a negative free cash flow (FCF) of $10 billion in Q2. FCF is vital for a company as it represents how much real cash, or spendable cash, is left to cover costs and keep the business running. COO Jeff Clarke said the company’s AI server orders were at a record $12.3 billion. He also said the company had $30 billion in orders year-to-date (YTD).&nbsp;“Our five-quarter pipeline is multiples of our $18.4 billion backlog with a mix of neocloud, sovereign and enterprise customers,” Clarke said. He attributed the company’s AI outperformance to its “ability to engineer bespoke high-performance solutions, rapidly deploy large, complex clusters, and provide global support.”HP’s Lores spoke about the company accelerating innovation across AI-powered devices to drive productivity, security and flexibility for its customers.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Dell vs. HP: How Business Segments Fared</h2>Dell’s Infrastructure Solution segment’s revenue (52% of the total) climbed 24%, thanks to record Servers and Networking revenue, which rose 37% to $10.1 billion. But storage revenue slipped 1% to $4 billion.&nbsp;Dell managed to offset a 7% YoY drop in consumer PC revenue by a 3% increase in commercial client revenue. In all, Dell’s Client Solutions revenue climbed 3% to $12.5 billion. This marked a sharp rise from the year-ago’s 7.8 billion Kronor. The jump came after the company sold its call routing business iconective, which yielded a one-time capital gain of 7.6 billion Kronor. Adjusted EBITA margin improved to 28.1% from 12.6%.Net sales, however, slipped 4% year-over-year to 56.2 billion Kronor. On an organic basis, sales remained flat. CEO Börje Ekholm said, ”In Q3, we established margins at a new long-term level following strong operational execution over the past few years,” adding that Cloud Software and Services sales grew 9% on an adjusted basis, driven by strong growth in core networks.Looking ahead, Ericsson expects Enterprise organic sales to stabilize in the fourth quarter and the Radio Access Network (RAN) market to remain broadly stable. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posted a message on the X social media platform on Monday regarding a partnership between the software giant and xAI, the artificial intelligence (AI) startup founded by Elon Musk.&nbsp;Sharing&nbsp;Microsoft Azure’s X post, Nadella said, “Welcome Grok 4 to Azure AI Foundry!” In a terse acknowledgement, Musk said, “Thanks Satya.” The Grok 4 is xAI’s most advanced reasoning large-language model that offers advanced reasoning, real-time insights and enhanced memorization.In a blog post on the Microsoft&nbsp;Azure website, the company stated that the collaboration will enable the delivery of powerful reasoning designed for business-ready safety and control. The Grok 4 features a 128K-token context window, native tool support, and integrated web search, Microsoft said, adding that over the last month, both companies have collaborated closely to enhance responsible design.&nbsp;The software giant said, “The team has evaluated from a responsible AI perspective, putting Grok 4 through a suite of safety tests and compliance checks. It also noted that the Azure AI Content Safety is on by default, adding another layer of protection for enterprise use.Microsoft also noted that its internal Azure AI Foundry benchmarking service showed that Grok 4 showed “impressive” capabilities on high-complexity tasks. The planned divestment was required by a law passed by the previous Joe Biden administration, citing security concerns posed by the platform. The law also sought a ban on the platform in the U.S. in the event of non-compliance.The plan would reduce ByteDance’s stake to less than 20%, with the Chinese company getting only one board representation and being excluded from TikTok U.S.’s security committee.&nbsp;TikTok would be majority-owned by U.S. investors, operated in the U.S. by a board of directors with national security and cybersecurity credentials, and subject to strict rules to protect Americans’ data and our national security.The White House statement also stated that Oracle would serve as TikTok’s security provider, monitoring and ensuring the safety of the latter’s operations in the U.S. All U.S. user data would be stored in a trusted, secure, and purpose-built cloud environment in the U.S. run by Oracle. The Trump administration also directed Attorney General Pamela Bondi not to enforce the Biden administration’s TikTok law for 120 days, allowing the divestiture to be completed.&nbsp;A high-level delegation from the U.S. and China, headed by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and&nbsp; Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, discussed the proposed deal at talks held in Madrid earlier this month.&nbsp;Vice President J.D. Vance stated that the new U.S. company would be valued at approximately $14 billion, according to a Reuters report. In an April note, Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said TikTok’s valuation would be around $100 billion, but without the algorithm, the deal price would be around $30 billion to $40 billion.
