FSGS is a serious condition that causes protein leakage in urine, leading to progressive kidney damage and potential failure. The company estimates that over 30,000 people in the U.S. with FSGS without nephrotic syndrome could be eligible for the treatment.The decision follows a delayed review prompted by the FDA's request for additional data. Approval was supported by late-stage trial results showing Filspari reduced proteinuria by 48% over 108 weeks.Brokerages turned bullish on Travere Therapeutics following the FDA approval. Canaccord raised its price target to $56 from $47 and maintained a ‘Buy’ rating, according to The Fly, projecting peak sales of $547 million for the drug by 2032.Citi analyst Yigal Nochomovitz increased the firm’s price target to $53 from $48, keeping a ‘Buy’ rating. Travere expects that there are at least 30,000 people in the U.S. with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis but without nephrotic syndrome.Filspari was previously greenlit by the FDA for the treatment of IgA nephropathy, a chronic autoimmune kidney disease characterized by the abnormal accumulation of immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies in the kidneys' filtering units.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Fresh Approval</h2>While the FDA was previously expected to decide on Travere’s application by January, it pushed it to April after requesting additional information to assess Filspari’s clinical benefit. The company submitted responses, and the agency determined that the responses constitute a major amendment to the application, and extended the review timeline.Filspari was approved in the new indication based on data from a late stage trial where FSGS patients without nephrotic syndrome who were treated with Filspari experienced a 48% reduction in proteinuria from baseline to week 108 compared to 27% for those treated with irbesartan.FSGS is a rare and serious kidney disorder driven by proteinuria or protein leaks into the urine due to a breakdown of the normal filtration mechanism in the kidney. The firm expects the FDA to approve Filspari and added that the current share price does not fully reflect the company’s opportunity in FSGS.Travere’s Phase 3 study met its interim goal for proteinuria reduction but did not meet the primary kidney function endpoint. However, longer-term results showed the drug improved proteinuria, remission rates, and reduced progression to kidney failure, while remaining well-tolerated.
