The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General on Wednesday launched a probe into the data collection challenges faced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).The letter stated that the review will focus on the issues faced by BLS with respect to collecting information for the producer price index (PPI) and consumer price index (CPI), the two closely watched inflation gauges. The review will also cover issues in relation to “collecting and reporting, including revising, monthly employment data,” according to the letter.The internal watchdog initiated the probe after the BLS reported a reduction in its data collection for PPI and CPI indexes. The BLS issuing a “large downward revision of its estimate of new jobs in the monthly Employment Situation Report” was another reason cited by Assistant Inspector General for Audit Laura Nicolosi in the letter.This follows the BLS's preliminary revision of job growth downward by&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/job-growth-revised-down-911000-march-bls-weaker-than-reported-labor-market/chwK4APRdtg">911,000 roles</a> between April 2024 and March 2025. A final revision is scheduled for February 2026. As Wholesale Inflation Cools In August, El-Erian Says The Question To Fed Should Be 'Why Not 50?’: Report

In an interview with CNBC, El-Erian was reacting to the August PPI report, which showed wholesale inflation declined by 0.1%.

A measure of wholesale prices fell in August, coming in lower than Wall Street estimates,&nbsp;following a rise in July.The producer price index, a gauge of prices that producers receive for their goods and services in the open market, edged&nbsp;lower by 0.1% in August, after rising&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/ppi-report-wholesale-inflation-surges-to-3-3-in-july/chsRSI7RdOJ">0.9% in July</a>.On an annual basis, headline inflation saw a 2.6% increase in August, compared to 3.1% in July.Core PPI, which excludes food, energy, and trade services, moved up by 0.3% in August, marking the fourth consecutive increase, the BLS report stated. On an annual basis,&nbsp;core PPI rose 2.8%, which is the largest 12-month advance since climbing 3.5% in March 2025.Goods prices increased by 0.1% in August, while services prices witnessed a 0.2% fall during the month.Within goods, the BLS noted that prices of tobacco surged nearly 2.3%, emerging as a major driver of goods inflation in August. Indexes of beef and veal, processed poultry, printed circuit assemblies, boards, modules, and modems, and electric power fuel rose during the month, while utility natural gas, fresh and dry vegetables, chicken, eggs, and copper base scrap declined.Regarding the decline in service costs, the agency noted that 75% of the decrease in the index in August could be attributed to a 3.9% decline in margins for machinery and vehicle wholesaling. Indexes for professional and commercial equipment wholesaling, chemicals and allied products wholesaling, furniture retailing, food and alcohol retailing, and data processing also declined.Meanwhile, U.S. equities gained in Wednesday’s pre-market trading session as investors digested inflation data. PPI Report: Wholesale Inflation Falls 0.1% In August

The report adds that the interest rates on 15-year and five-year mortgages were down to their lowest levels in nearly a year.Over the past five trading sessions, the 10-year Treasury yields have dropped by 16 basis points, hovering around 4.08% at the time of writing. Dow Futures Edge Lower As Investors Turn Cautious Ahead Of Inflation Data: ORCL, KLAR, HOOD, GME Among Stocks To Watch

While Dow Jones futures edged lower by 0.15% at the time of writing, the S&P 500 futures rose 0.25%.

Trading in U.S. index futures suggests a mixed opening for Wall Street stocks on Wednesday, as traders await the August producer price index (PPI) report.&nbsp;Oracle’s (ORCL) positive near and medium-term outlook has pushed its stock higher in premarket trading, and the guidance has positive readthrough for other artificial intelligence (AI) companies as well.As of 4 a.m. ET on Wednesday, the Nasdaq 100 and S&amp;P 500 futures rose 0.07% and 0.15%, respectively, while the Dow and Russell 2,000 futures fell 0.20% and 0.35%, respectively.On Tuesday, stocks ended mostly higher, although the small-cap space came under modest selling pressure. U.S. President Donald Trump’s clampdown on China and the frosty relationship between the two countries have reportedly led American businesses to look elsewhere.&nbsp;The American&nbsp; Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) said in Shanghai on Wednesday that about 47% of U.S. businesses surveyed said they have redirected planned China investments over the past year, marking the highest on record, a CNBC&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/10/record-share-of-us-businesses-divert-china-investments-amcham-shanghai-.html">report</a> stated.The survey was conducted by the association between May 19 and July 20, and the question about investment intention was first asked in the study in 2017.The respondents said they had diverted their investments to Southeast Asia — a region comprising countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Brunei.The investment destination that was favored after Southeast Asia is the Indian subcontinent, comprising countries such as India and Bangladesh, followed by the U.S. and Mexico.Apple, which was almost entirely reliant on China and Chinese firms operating in Taiwan before it began diversifying its supply chain amid geopolitical challenges, has stepped up its efforts in that direction. The tariff standoff has forced the company to manufacture most of its U.S.-bound iPhones in India.The equity markets of both countries have largely shrugged off the tariff threat. The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY)</a> and the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/QQQ">Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ)</a>, exchange-traded funds (ETF) that track the S&amp;P 500 Index and the Nasdaq 100 Index, have gained 11.63% and 13.85%, respectively, for the year. Meanwhile, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MCHI">iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI)</a> has risen a steeper 35.71%.AmCham Shanghai President Eric Zheng reportedly suggested the 90-day pause the U.S. and China agreed to in August may not be an incentive for the American firms. “For a company, 90 days, that’s just way too short,” he said, adding that supply chain planning is done for a longer term.After the U.S. announced steep tariffs as part of the “Liberation Day” levies in early April, the rates were ratcheted up following moves and counter moves. Since then, the two countries have met at least three times to resolve the trade dispute, although a preliminary framework agreement is yet to be worked out.AmCham Chair Jeffrey Lehman said China’s retaliatory tariffs also dampened investment decisions as inputs used to build products are often sourced from the U.S.&nbsp;The survey also found that U.S. companies viewed their Chinese rivals as more advanced on six of the eight criteria, including speed to market and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI).Information available on AmCham’s website showed it has more than 3,000 members, including over 1,000 companies ranging from startups to the largest global multinational corporations. President Donald Trump’s attempts to remove Federal Reserve Bank (FRB) Governor Lisa Cook, alleging mortgage fraud, faced a setback as a federal court judge temporarily stayed the move.U.S. District Judge for the District Court of Columbia Jia Cobb said, “The Court will enter an injunction directing [Jerome] Powell and the Board of Governors to allow Cook to continue to operate as a member of the Board for the pendency of this litigation.The court declined the government’s request to stay its decision pending any approval, Cobb said in a 49-page ruling.&nbsp; “The public interest in this case is not only limited to the interests of the Executive Branch. There is a substantial public interest in having governmental actors like the President abide by the federal laws.”“The Court recognizes that this case involves the first ‘for cause’ removal of a Federal Reserve Board Governor, and as a result, raises important matters of first impression. However, for the reasons stated in this opinion, the Court finds that the balance of equities would not be in the Government’s favor,” the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://ecf.dcd.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/show_public_doc?2025cv2903-27">ruling</a> read.The ruling allows Cook to participate in next week’s widely-awaited meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which is the rate-setting committee of the central bank.
