Spot silver also rose 2.9% to $52.9 per ounce.Separately, tensions between the U.S. and China have risen again after President Donald Trump said the U.S. might halt its cooking oil trade with China due to Beijing’s reluctance to purchase American soybeans.“We are considering terminating business with China having to do with Cooking Oil, and other elements of Trade, as retribution. Non-yielding bullion tends to thrive in low-interest-rate environments as a hedge against inflation.Safe-haven flows continued to arrive for precious metals as the trade dispute between the U.S. and China threatened another tariff war. However, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent assured that a scheduled meeting between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, is still expected to take place in South Korea later this month.Silver’s Record RunSilver prices soared past $51.20 per ounce, the highest level since U.S. billionaires Hunt brothers attempted to squeeze the market. So far this year, silver has outperformed gold, with over 83% gains compared to gold's 56% surge.&nbsp;Silver’s recent leap has been driven by a supply shortage in London, as producers fail to keep up with demand. London stocks were also diminished earlier this year when gold and silver bars were rushed to the U.S. in anticipation of tariffs imposed by Trump.“Beyond safe-haven demand, diversification from the U.S. dollar and rate cut expectations, silver prices benefit from industrial demand, including solar panels and wind turbines. Gold, Silver Prices Climb To Fresh Record Highs Amid Renewed Trade Tensions Between US, China

Spot gold prices climbed to a new high of $4,084 per troy ounce, while spot silver prices soared to $51.74 on Monday.

Silver prices surged to the highest level in more than four decades amid growing concerns of fiscal risks in the U.S., with the government shutdown entering its ninth day.Spot silver prices climbed to a new high of $50.04 per troy ounce, rising nearly 2.4% over the previous day. However, silver futures maturing in December edged lower by 0.13% to $48.93.According to a Bloomberg&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-10-09/spot-silver-hits-highest-in-decades-on-haven-rally-tight-market?srnd=homepage-americas">report</a>, the current spot silver price is at the highest level since the Hunt brothers' squeeze in the 1970s and 80s. The report states that the ongoing surge in silver prices is due to concerns about the state of the U.S. economy as well as threats to the Federal Reserve’s independence, apart from a shortage of freely available silver in London, a key market for the metal.“The interesting aspect about the silver market is that the net long positions are only modestly higher so this is not a rally based upon speculative interest.
