The move leaves Bytedance with a large inventory of high-end chips it cannot currently utilize, creating both operational and financial challenges.Simply put, Bytedance stockpiled Nvidia GPUs in anticipation of potential bottlenecks – and now it can’t use them. Bytedance Reportedly Tops Chinese Nvidia Chip Buyers – But Now It Can't Use Them 

The TikTok-owned company stockpiled GPUs to prepare for potential U.S. supply restrictions.

(GOOGL) (GOOG) posing a threat to its artificial intelligence (AI) chip dominance. Nvidia downplayed the Alphabet threat, while a Google executive and strategists suggest that the AI chip market may not be a “zero-sum game.”Tuesday’s dip in&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/NVDA">Nvidia stock</a> came even as&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/GOOGL">Alphabet stock</a> rallied over 1.50% to a fresh high.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Market Clueless</h2>In a post on X, Google DeepMind research scientist Amir Yazdan said, “The selloff shows how clueless the market is about hardware and the demand.” He has been with Google since mid-2018, according to his LinkedIn profile.In the thread, he said AI demand is incredibly high. He, however, clarified that he did not design Google’s AI chips, known as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs).Through a post on Nvidia Newsroom's X handle, the Jensen Huang-led company rubbished talks of Alphabet upsetting its AI chip apple cart. While&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/nvidia-says-its-delighted-by-googles-success/cL5285cREgf">lauding Alphabet for its success</a> with AI, Nvidia continues to supply to Google. “NVIDIA is a generation ahead of the industry — it’s the only platform that runs every AI model and does it everywhere computing is done,” it said.The Nvidia AI chip vs. Google TPU debate was sparked by an Information report that said Meta and other companies were evaluating the latter for use in their data centers. Alphabet previously deployed TPUs for in-house use and also rented them to companies running large-scale AI workloads in its own cloud data centers.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Analysts Weigh In</h2>Bank of America’s Vivek Arya delved into the issue last Friday, arguing that Alphabet’s custom TPU chip may not pose a significant competitive threat to Nvidia,&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://in.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/bank-of-america-defends-nvidia-says-market-is-misreading-the-numbers-5123664">according</a> to Investing.com. The analyst said Nvidia’s AI chips are “ubiquitous/available in every cloud and involved in almost every other LLM” and offer “the fastest time-to-market and best performance/watt.”The Future Fund’s Gary Black sees a potential deal between Google and Meta that would help establish TPUs as an alternative to Nvidia’s chips, the gold standard for big tech firms and startups from Meta to OpenAI that need computing power to develop and run AI platforms.&nbsp; He noted that Google announced last month a deal to supply up to one million of its chips to Anthropic PBC, drawing attention to the potential for long-term challenges to Nvidia’s dominant market position.Futurum Group’s Daniel Newman said, “The zero-sum stupidity has found its peak with this GPU/TPU nonsense. The market will literally be in the trillions for AI infrastructure, and $GOOGL $NVDA $AMD can all do well.” He also expects other names, such as Amazon and Qualcomm, to generate billions in revenue from AI Chips due to the massive scale of the opportunity. This is in contrast to the rumored view of Google executives that TPU usage would cause a 10% dent in Nvidia’s annual revenue.Meanwhile, Alphabet’s stock has embarked on a breathtaking rally, gaining 15% so far in November and 71% year-to-date. It is now the best-performing “Magnificent Seven” stock of 2025. According to a Bloomberg report, TSMC lodged a complaint on November 25 in Taiwan’s Intellectual Property and Commercial Court, accusing its ex–senior vice president of violating a non-compete agreement.

The stock has shed about 10% so far this month.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Nvidia Rushes To Defend Itself</h2>The whole saga started as Burry, who came down heavily upon hyperscalers, criticising their capex spending and depreciation accounting following his social-media return in late October, weighed in on Nvidia’s stock-based compensation (SBC) accounting. His&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/michael-burry-tears-into-nvidia-after-q3/cLPAPKIRE9e">Nvidia comments</a> came shortly after the company reported stellar third-quarter results.Aside from Burry’s attacks, market participants also raised concerns about the spike in the company’s days sales outstanding (DSO), which is the average number of days taken by the company to collect payment after a credit sale.Over the weekend, Nvidia reportedly shared a seven-page memo with Wall Street analysts that addressed&nbsp;sceptical investors' claims,&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/nvidia-stock-ai-accounting-allegations-366f16ac?mod=RTA">according</a> to Barron’s. The memo reportedly cited Burry’s X post and a Substack&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://substack.com/home/post/p-179453867">post</a> by Shanaka Perera entitled “The Algorithm That Detected a $610 Billion Fraud: How Machine Intelligence Exposed the AI Industry’s Circular Financing Scheme” as source documents.&nbsp;In the memo, Nvidia responded to each of the allegations, including concerns about share repurchases, accounts receivable, and inventory. Among its arguments is that Burry’s Nvidia stock buyback number since 2018 was off by about $20 billion, and that he has included restricted stock unit (RSU) taxes in his calculations. The company&nbsp;said repurchases since 2018 were well below intrinsic volume, creating “substantial” value for shareholders. This is a pushback against Burry’s claim that the company understated SBC, inflating owners’ earnings by 50%.Nvidia also contended in the memo that the current allegations are analogous to “historical accounting frauds (Enron, WorldCom, Lucent) that featured vendor financing and SPVs [special purpose vehicles].”“NVIDIA does not resemble historical accounting frauds because NVIDIA’s underlying business is economically sound, our reporting is complete and transparent, and we care about our reputation for integrity,” the memo said. “Unlike Enron, NVIDIA does not use Special Purpose Entities to hide debt and inflate revenue.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry Sticks To Stance</h2>While making note of Nvidia’s private clarification to Wall Street, Burry, who shot to prominence with his accurate and prescient prediction of the 2008 housing market collapse, said, “I stand by my analysis. Obviously, the full analysis does not fit in a tweet. I will release on my timeline.”The “Big Short” fame investor said his first Substack post, entitled “The Heretic’s Guide to AI’s Stars ‘Supply-Side Gluttony,” is a light read. “The second in the Heretic series will be a heavier lift.”While sharing screenshots of Nvidia’s memo, Barron’s senior tech writer Tae Kim said, “Nvidia should have published this in an 8-K filing instead of just emailing a memo to Wall Street sell-side analysts.”Social media users’ reaction was mixed.
