More than two years after entering the Japanese market, BYD is still struggling to attract buyers. The Chinese EV maker sold just 5,300 vehicles between January 2023 and June 2025, despite opening 45 dealerships, introducing new models, and planning a kei car launch for 2026.The company has turned to discounts of up to 1 million yen ($6,700), effectively cutting prices by as much as 50% when combined with subsidies to boost demand, according to a Bloomberg&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-28/byd-brings-price-war-to-japan-in-bid-to-win-over-customers">report</a>.&nbsp;Its Atto 3 SUV retails for just under 4.2 million yen. However, Bloomberg Intelligence senior auto analyst Tatsuo Yoshida said BYD’s discounting strategy could easily backfire in Japan, where carmakers almost never cut prices. He added that the move could frustrate early adopters who paid more, and may also lower the cars' resale value.According to Yoshida, BYD’s struggle highlights how difficult it is for overseas automakers to win over Japanese drivers, who still prefer hybrids and tend to stick with familiar brands like Toyota, Nissan, and Honda. He pointed out that General Motors quit the Saturn brand after weak sales, while Hyundai is only now trying again after pulling out more than a decade ago.BYD sold 512 vehicles in June, less than half of Nissan’s Sakura, Japan’s top-selling EV, pointing to a level Yoshida said may not even cover operating costs. It features a spacious cabin and large windows and is designed to be adapted for shuttle services, food vending and other mobile retail uses.&nbsp;Toyota said the vehicles will be deployed in and around Toyota Arena Tokyo in the Odaiba waterfront district when the complex opens on Oct. 3.“We need mobility that will get Odaiba excited,” Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda said at the opening ceremony. “We believe that safety is always the first priority, which is why autonomous vehicles are the future,” according to a Nikkei&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://asia.nikkei.com/business/automobiles/electric-vehicles/toyota-releases-e-palette-ev-aiming-for-full-autonomous-driving">report</a>.&nbsp;Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said the project would improve accessibility in the capital and called the arena launch “a step toward the next generation of mobility.”Toyota first introduced the e-Palette back in 2018 at CES. It later showed up at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, shuttling athletes around, though that trial drew headlines after one of the vehicles was involved in a collision.&nbsp;The version unveiled this week can handle Level 2 driver-assist functions, and Toyota said it’s working toward Level 4 capability, where the vehicle could drive itself in certain settings without any human input.The e-Palette runs on a 72.8 kWh lithium-ion battery with a range of about 250 kilometers. Retail Traders Pile In As Toyota Unveils $196K EV In Tokyo, Eyes Level 4 Autonomy By 2027

The $196,000 e-Palette, designed for uses ranging from shuttles to food stalls, went on sale Monday and will be deployed at Toyota’s new Tokyo arena opening in October.

The U.S. will start charging a 15% tariff on Japanese cars, light trucks and auto parts from early Tuesday morning, Customs and Border Protection said, putting into effect a trade deal the two countries sealed in July.The change, laid out in an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Sept. 4, reduces auto duties from 27.5% and establishes a baseline 15% tariff on nearly all Japanese imports, with separate treatment for aerospace products.&nbsp;Japan’s top trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/us-to-implement-lower-15-tariffs-on-japanese-cars-and-auto-parts-by-next-week/chw0njNRdrt">welcomed the move last week</a>, saying in a post on X that the order represented “steady implementation of the agreement reached on July 22” after months of talks.&nbsp;Tokyo has pushed hard for relief, viewing auto tariffs as a critical issue for its export-heavy economy. Honda Bets On $18K N-ONE e To Spark Japan’s EV Transition And Race Ahead Of Nissan

The launch comes as Japan’s EV adoption remains sluggish, with kei cars seen as a gateway to wider acceptance. 

Global automakers are reportedly relying more on Chinese technology to fast-track electric vehicles, with Ford, Toyota, Renault and Volkswagen joining Audi in adopting Chinese EV platforms, software and powertrains to cut costs and shorten timelines.Audi’s turning point came in 2021, when its executives were stunned by the Zeekr 001, a long-range EV with European styling. “The Zeekr 001 back then shocked quite everyone,” said Stefan Poetzl, president of SAIC Audi Sales and Marketing, according to a Reuters&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/china-inside-how-chinese-ev-tech-is-reshaping-global-auto-design-2025-09-11/">report</a>.&nbsp;In response, Audi partnered with SAIC to develop the Audi E5 Sportback, built in just 18 months with Chinese batteries, electric drive systems, infotainment and advanced driver assistance. The $33,000 model will be delivered to Chinese buyers this month.Other global players are pursuing similar strategies. Toyota is co-developing China-dedicated models with Guangzhou-based GAC, while Volkswagen has expanded plans with Xpeng that cover both EV and fuel models.&nbsp;Renault built the Dacia Spring on a Dongfeng platform and is apparently developing a new electric Twingo in Shanghai with support from Launch Design. Ford is actively seeking a Chinese partner, with CEO Jim Farley praising local models such as Xiaomi’s SU7 sedan.Stellantis has already taken the step of licensing technology: CEO Zhu Jiangming said its partner Leapmotor will sell EVs overseas and is in talks with other brands to license its platform.&nbsp;Abu Dhabi-based CYVN Holdings, an investor in Nio, has also reportedly built a premium EV using Nio’s chassis and software, with plans to sell under the McLaren brand.Analysts say the model resembles the “Intel Inside” campaign of the 1990s, where Chinese EV makers package chassis, batteries and software into ready-made kits for foreign manufacturers.&nbsp;The approach saves billions in R&amp;D and years of development, while providing Chinese companies with valuable licensing revenue amid a bruising domestic price war and mounting trade tensions abroad.“It is a very smart, win-win solution,” said Will Wang, general manager of Shanghai-based consultancy Autodatas. Marco Santino of Oliver Wyman added that the “firepower” of China’s fierce EV competition allows legacy carmakers to bring higher-quality products to market more quickly.But some warn of long-term risks.
