Gold Falls Below $5,000, Spot Silver Plunges 20%

Spot gold prices slumped more than 8% on Friday, falling below the $5,000 an ounce for the first time since January 23, while spot silver plummeted to $91.6 per ounce from $115.6 in the previous session.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Citi expects silver to continue outperforming gold until it appears expensive by historical standards.</li><li>Citi sees an additional 30% to 40% upside to spot prices in the near term.</li><li>The bank also noted that if the gold-to-silver ratio were to return to its 2011 low, silver prices could reach $160 to $170 an ounce.</li></ul>Citigroup expects silver’s powerful rally to extend further, forecasting spot prices could surge to a record $150 an ounce within the next three months, according to a report by Bloomberg on Tuesday.Spot silver (XAG/USD) has been on a historic run, gaining over 50% in 2026.&nbsp;As of Tuesday, it is up 4.3% at $108.3 per ounce. An extremely volatile session on Monday saw the precious metal surge over 13% to a record high of $117.75 an ounce before wiping off most of the gains to close 0.3% higher.Citi analysts, led by Max Layton, stated that the rally is being driven by strong physical and speculative demand, particularly from China, in a market that remains relatively illiquid.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Gold On Steroids</h2>“Silver is behaving like ‘gold squared’ or ‘gold on steroids,’” the analysts wrote, noting that higher prices may be needed to coax existing holders to sell. Citi believes silver will continue to outperform gold until it appears expensive by historical standards.Despite traditionally bearish signals such as ETF outflows and reduced speculative positioning in futures markets, prices have continued to climb. Layton said the move is being fueled more by capital flows than traditional fundamentals, supported by geopolitical risks and renewed concerns over Federal Reserve independence.Citi now sees an additional 30% to 40% upside in the near term. The bank also noted that if the gold-to-silver ratio were to return to its 2011 low, silver prices could reach $160 to $170 an ounce.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Expert Take</h2>Not everyone is convinced. Citi Reportedly Expects Spot Silver To Hit $150 An Ounce In 3 Months: Analysts Say Precious Metal Behaving Like ‘Gold On Steroids’

Citi analysts believe that the rally is being driven by strong physical and speculative demand, particularly from China, according to a Bloomberg report.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Silver’s sharp December rally pushed trend and momentum indicators to levels that have rarely been seen historically, according to Ned Davis Research.&nbsp;</li><li>A surging three-week flow into the ProShares Ultra Silver ETF indicates heightened speculation and retail participation in the metal, Bauer said.</li><li>Based on return and duration measures, the strategist believes that this is an aging silver bull market.</li></ul>Silver’s current rally shows some signs of a bubble and is overbought, Ned Davis Research reportedly told clients.According to CNBC, Ned Davis Research’s commodity strategist Matt Bauer said the commodity’s sharp December rally pushed trend and momentum indicators to levels rarely seen historically.Silver has gone without a 20% correction for 833 days, and this run is near a 45-year record, Bauer said in a note on Wednesday. Based on these metrics, silver appears to be overbought, according to Bauer.Silver spot (XAG/USD) was trading at $71.75 per troy ounce at the time of writing.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Historic Run</h2>Silver has had a historic run in 2025, climbing nearly 150% in the year. The white metal has hit multiple all-time highs, with the most recent being $83.64 on Dec. 29, 2025.However, a surging three-week flow into the ProShares Ultra Silver ETF (AGQ) signals heightened speculation and retail participation, according to Bauer. Yet, the metal’s year-end rally has not yet pushed into excessive optimism, the strategist added.Bauer believes that this is an aging silver bull market, based on return and duration measures. He added that the positioning and sentiment below prior extremes indicate that a minor correction may position the metal for additional upside.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Rising Demand</h2>Silver’s 2025 rally comes as demand for the metal has increased amid rising industrial use. Over 70% anticipate further gains next year, following a year-to-date surge of more than 60%.Brokerages echo the optimism, with UBS and Goldman Sachs both projecting gold could reach about $4,900 by 2026, supported by Fed cuts, lower yields, and geopolitical risks.Both gold and silver have benefited from a weak dollar, lower interest rate expectations, and increased investment in safe-haven assets. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;At the time of writing, spot gold fell 1.4% to $4,173.11 an ounce and has gained 60% so far this year.<h2 class="st-heading-2">JPMorgan Expects Copper Rally To Persist</h2>Copper prices have also seen substantial gains, with the metal hitting a record high of $11,334 per ton on the London Metal Exchange on Monday. The recent surge has been fueled by deepening supply stress, highlighted at a major industry conference in Shanghai after a year of unexpected mine disruptions.&nbsp;Smelters are engaged in complex negotiations with miners over scarce ore, premiums have jumped, and trader Mercuria Energy Group has reportedly warned of potential shortages in 2025.While prices eased slightly on Tuesday, copper remains up 28% on the LME this year. The market is also being shaped by U.S. reserves, which remain elevated, with domestic prices at a premium amid potential tariff risks.Looking ahead, JPMorgan expects the rally to persist, forecasting copper to reach $12,500 a ton by the second quarter of 2026.“The continued surge in demand for compute remains extremely topical for copper markets, even if overall demand from the sector is growing from a small base.
