CEO Elon Musk has responded to Ford CEO Jim Farley's remarks about viewing Chinese automaker BYD as a more serious rival than Tesla, saying there was just one key hurdle standing in the American EV maker's way.Meanwhile, Tesla shares are on track for their first positive month of the year, lifted by easing fears of an escalating U.S.-Iran military conflict as diplomatic talks gained traction and fresh investor optimism builds around Musk's ambitions to build a massive in-house semiconductor fabrication plant for AI chips.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Musk Flags China Output Constraint&nbsp;</h2>Last week, Farley, in an&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.fastcompany.com/91528934/jim-farley-on-why-ford-is-doubling-down-on-affordable-evs">interview</a> with Fast Company, said: “If you’re an American and you want us to beat the Chinese in the car business, you’re all going to want to pay attention, not necessarily to Tesla. Nothing against Tesla — they’ve been doing great — but they really don’t have an updated vehicle.”"The best in the business for us, cost-wise and competition-wise, supply chain, manufacturing expertise, and the IP in the vehicle, was really BYD. And BYD became the highest-volume brand in China, not VW or the Western brands," he added.&nbsp;Responding to Farley’s remarks, Musk&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2046013308051009791">said on X</a>, “This is before supervised FSD&nbsp;[full self-driving]&nbsp;is approved in China. Limiting factor is production output in Shanghai.”Farley said Chinese automakers had forced U.S. manufacturers to boost innovation rather than rely on legacy advantages. “That is the gift that China gave us: to be fearful and respectful enough of their progress that we could not organically just phone it in,” Farley said. “We needed to do what Americans sometimes do great, which is use innovation to compete against the best in the world.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Tesla Signals Progress On China FSD Rollout</h2>Tesla has been laying the groundwork for a broader rollout of supervised FSD in China, though the company has not announced a confirmed launch timeline. In February, Tesla China Vice President Grace Tao said the company established a dedicated local training center to adapt the system to domestic driving conditions. “Once officially released, it will demonstrate a level of performance that is no less than, and may even surpass, that of local drivers,” Tao said.&nbsp;Musk previously said that FSD has received only partial regulatory approval in China so far, with full authorization potentially arriving this year.&nbsp;Over the weekend, Tesla expanded its unsupervised Robotaxi service to Dallas and Houston, adding two new Texas hubs to its growing driverless ride-hailing network. Tesla’s autonomy rollout is also gaining traction in Europe, where the Netherlands recently granted the company its first approval for FSD (Supervised).<h2 class="st-heading-2">China Rivals Step Up Pressure On TSLA</h2>Tesla’s Shanghai factory is the EV maker’s largest global export hub and a central pillar of its Asia manufacturing strategy, supporting both domestic Chinese demand and overseas shipments.The company faces rising competition from domestic automakers, including BYD, as well as tech-linked vehicle platforms from Xiaomi and Huawei. Chinese EV makers relying on budget electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are taking the biggest hits from the policy change, it added.Chinese EV giant BYD held just 7.1% market share in the two months, putting it in the fourth position, as per the report. BYD previously overtook Volkswagen as the largest carmaker in China by sales in 2024, retaining the title in 2025 as well.However, Volkswagen has begun production of its first model with Chinese EV maker XPeng. The automaker is looking to launch more than 20 new EV models in China this year, as per Reuters.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Investor Take On BYD</h2>Despite the sales slump, Michael Burry, the investor famous for predicting the U.S. housing crash and profiled in Michael Lewis’ book “The Big Short,” <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/byd-haidilao-pdd-michael-burry-chinese-stocks-earnings/cZdMrucRIBM">called</a> BYD one of the world’s most technologically advanced automakers because of its vertically integrated model. BYD manufactures its own chips, batteries, motors and other components. A key advantage is BYD’s Blade battery, which uses lithium iron phosphate, Burry said earlier this week. Tesla Rival BYD’s Top-Selling Spot In China Toppled By Volkswagen In First Two Months Of 2026

According to a report from Reuters, citing data from the China Passenger ⁠Car Association, Volkswagen’s Chinese joint ventures held a combined 13.9% market share in sales terms, compared to BYD’s 7.1%. 

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Michael Burry said Chinese stocks have suffered “1929-style crashes while the businesses kept growing.”</li><li>He said a reversal in sentiment could unlock “significant upside potential” for Hong Kong-listed companies.</li><li>Haidilao was Burry’s top pick, with the hot-pot chain generating about $870 million in free cash flow in 2024.</li></ul>Michael Burry, the investor famous for predicting the U.S. housing crash and profiled in Michael Lewis’ book “The Big Short,” said he currently favors one Chinese stock among BYD, Haidilao and PDD as investors brace for their earnings reports expected later this month.PDD is set to report earnings on March 19, BYD on March 23, and Haidilao on March 31.In a blog post on Hong Kong-listed companies, Burry said that Chinese equities “have had 1929-style crashes while the businesses kept growing. This has never happened in market history going back to 1900.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry Sees Rebound In Hong Kong Stocks</h2>Burry attributed the plunge in Chinese equities to regulatory shocks, macro turmoil, and battered investor sentiment, rather than failing fundamentals. He cited Beijing's crackdown on tech firms, the 2021 global asset bubble burst, China's property market collapse, and COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns as the key culprits. But when sentiment turns, he argued, it could converge with rising earnings to create "significant upside potential" in Hong Kong-listed shares.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry Calls BYD A ‘Mild Buy’</h2>Bury called EV giant BYD one of the world’s most technologically advanced automakers because of its vertically integrated model: the company manufactures its own chips, batteries, motors and other components. A key advantage is BYD’s Blade battery, which uses lithium iron phosphate,&nbsp;Burry said. He added that the design is cheaper and safer than the nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries widely used by rivals like Tesla.Burry said that BYD also benefits from a large working-capital windfall after pivoting away from selling primarily to Chinese government buyers. When government receivables were finally collected, the shift released about 40 billion yuan ($5.8 billion) in cash that helped fund overseas factory expansion.Burry rated the stock 7 out of 10, calling it a “mild buy” and said he would be an “aggressive buyer at HK$75 or better, if the thesis still holds at that time.”&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry Sees Hot Potential In Haidilao</h2>Burry suggested that Haidilao International, China’s only national hot pot restaurant brand, currently offers the most compelling opportunity. It still holds just about 2.2% of the market, he said, leaving significant room for expansion. Burry rated the stock 8 out of 10.He said Haidilao’s dining concept often feels like “mixing a luxury hotel with a hot pot restaurant,” but added it made a costly mistake by rapidly expanding during the COVID-19 pandemic, opening 540 restaurants between 2020 and 2021 just before China imposed strict lockdowns. The company later closed about 300 locations after the expansion and wrote off roughly two-thirds of the spending.&nbsp;Despite the setback, Haidilao generated about $870 million in free cash flow in 2024 and paid out 94% of earnings as dividends. Burry also said the food-delivery subsidy war among Meituan, Alibaba Group and JD.com inadvertently benefited restaurant chains as they spent roughly 100 billion yuan ($14 billion) on delivery incentives. “At the delivery companies’ expense, Haidilao acquired many new customers,” he said.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry Calls PDD Disclosure Problems ‘Vexing’</h2>Burry was more cautious about PDD Holdings, the parent company of Pinduoduo and Temu. He noted that the company built a profitable model in part by&nbsp;delaying payments to merchants while collecting customer payments for extended periods. “PDD would receive the order, arrange the drop ship, and then not pay its farmer suppliers for 500-600 days,” Burry said.The float once generated enough investment income to account for nearly all of the company’s profits. However, the model has faced growing challenges. Temu’s growth slowed after the U.S. closed a shipping loophole that allowed tariff-free imports, while competition intensified in China from JD.com and Alibaba.Meanwhile, Burry also raised concerns about the company’s financial disclosures. “PDD’s problem with disclosure is vexing,” he said, noting that the company provides little detail about revenue by geography, product, or business line.A short-seller report in 2018 alleged accounting discrepancies, though Burry said he believes the report likely overlooked part of the company’s complex structure. “Overall, I cannot call it fraud. BYD Stock Rises In Hong Kong After Teasing Song Ultra EV In Bestselling SUV Family

XPeng made 20,011 deliveries, down 34.1% on an annual basis and plunging 46.7% from December.Meanwhile, Li Auto made 27,668 deliveries, marking its eighth straight year-on-year drop, while sales also slumped 37.5% from the previous month.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Nio’s Delivery Growth Fails To Lift Stock</h2>Nio’s delivery volume against that backdrop still stood out, at least when compared with the prior year. The firm said it delivered 27,182 vehicles in January 2026, up 96.1% from a year earlier. However, deliveries declined 43.5% from December, which weighed on investor sentiment.Of those deliveries, 20,894 were Nio-branded vehicles, 3,481 were from its family-oriented sub-brand Onvo, while 2,807 were from its small EV brand Firefly. Cumulative sales rose to 1.02 million as of the end of January, surpassing the one-million-vehicle milestone.<h2 class="st-heading-2">ES8 Emerges As The Standout</h2>Much of Nio’s January performance rested on a single model. The third-generation ES8 SUV delivered 17,646 units during the month, accounting for nearly 65% of total deliveries. This is a dramatic increase from the 446 units delivered in January last year, reflecting the rapid ramp-up following the model’s launch at Nio Day in September 2025.Even so, ES8 deliveries were down about 21% from December’s record 22,258 units, when the model became China’s best-selling large SUV, according to the company. Nio also said it recently delivered its 60,000th third-generation ES8, just two weeks after reaching the 50,000-unit milestone.Deliveries at Onvo fell more than 61% from December, while Firefly deliveries dropped over 60% month-on-month. The two carmakers are reportedly discussing how a potential partnership would work, and are considering ideas including Ford importing batteries from BYD to non-U.S. factories.Shares of F traded marginally in the green at the time of writing.<h2 class="st-heading-2">BYD’s EV And Battery Capacities</h2>BYD is the world’s largest EV maker. Unlike its American counterpart Tesla, BYD makes both plug-in hybrid, and battery-powered electric vehicles.The company makes most of its batteries in China but it is also building capacity in overseas plants. While BYD has made some batteries for commercial vehicles at its California bus-manufacturing plant, it hasn't yet made passenger car batteries in the U.S., WSJ noted.Meanwhile, Ford is also putting up a battery plant in Michigan, where it intends to build low-cost cells starting this year with the help of technology from Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) to power its future electric vehicles.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Ford’s Pivot Away From EVs</h2>The report of the new deal talks comes on the heels of Ford realigning its EV strategy last month, pivoting away from pure EVs, and towards hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.Ford said in December that it expects to incur $19.5 billion in EV-related charges after it killed several big EV models to stem losses from the segment.
