Ethereum is a global, open-source platform for decentralized applications. In other words, it is a decentralized blockchain platform that enables developers to build and deploy smart contracts and applications without central authority control. Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily functions as digital currency, Ethereum operates as a programmable global computer where developers can create any type of decentralized service.   The platform hosts over $14 billion in DeFi applications with hundreds of thousands of active users across financial protocols, NFT marketplaces, and gaming platforms. Its transition to Proof of Stake in September 2022 reduced energy consumption by over 99%, addressing environmental concerns while strengthening network security.  The network operates through thousands of independent validator nodes that process transactions and execute smart contracts on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that automatically carry out agreements when conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries like banks or brokers.   Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. The asset is increasingly adopted by traditional institutions, with publicly traded companies adding ETH to corporate treasuries to generate staking yields while maintaining blockchain exposure, and in 2024, the SEC approved spot Ethereum ETFs, allowing traditional investors to gain exposure through conventional brokerage accounts.  Ethereum's roadmap focuses on dramatically increasing transaction capacity to over 100,000 per second, reducing confirmation times, and enhancing decentralization while maintaining security against future threats like quantum computing.

This has never happened in market history going back to 1900.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry Sees Rebound In Hong Kong Stocks</h2>Burry attributed the plunge in Chinese equities to regulatory shocks, macro turmoil, and battered investor sentiment, rather than failing fundamentals. He cited Beijing's crackdown on tech firms, the 2021 global asset bubble burst, China's property market collapse, and COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns as the key culprits. But when sentiment turns, he argued, it could converge with rising earnings to create "significant upside potential" in Hong Kong-listed shares.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry Calls BYD A ‘Mild Buy’</h2>Bury called EV giant BYD one of the world’s most technologically advanced automakers because of its vertically integrated model: the company manufactures its own chips, batteries, motors and other components. A key advantage is BYD’s Blade battery, which uses lithium iron phosphate,&nbsp;Burry said. He added that the design is cheaper and safer than the nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries widely used by rivals like Tesla.Burry said that BYD also benefits from a large working-capital windfall after pivoting away from selling primarily to Chinese government buyers. When government receivables were finally collected, the shift released about 40 billion yuan ($5.8 billion) in cash that helped fund overseas factory expansion.Burry rated the stock 7 out of 10, calling it a “mild buy” and said he would be an “aggressive buyer at HK$75 or better, if the thesis still holds at that time.”&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry Sees Hot Potential In Haidilao</h2>Burry suggested that Haidilao International, China’s only national hot pot restaurant brand, currently offers the most compelling opportunity. It still holds just about 2.2% of the market, he said, leaving significant room for expansion. Burry rated the stock 8 out of 10.He said Haidilao’s dining concept often feels like “mixing a luxury hotel with a hot pot restaurant,” but added it made a costly mistake by rapidly expanding during the COVID-19 pandemic, opening 540 restaurants between 2020 and 2021 just before China imposed strict lockdowns. The company later closed about 300 locations after the expansion and wrote off roughly two-thirds of the spending.&nbsp;Despite the setback, Haidilao generated about $870 million in free cash flow in 2024 and paid out 94% of earnings as dividends. Burry also said the food-delivery subsidy war among Meituan, Alibaba Group and JD.com inadvertently benefited restaurant chains as they spent roughly 100 billion yuan ($14 billion) on delivery incentives. “At the delivery companies’ expense, Haidilao acquired many new customers,” he said.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry Calls PDD Disclosure Problems ‘Vexing’</h2>Burry was more cautious about PDD Holdings, the parent company of Pinduoduo and Temu. He noted that the company built a profitable model in part by&nbsp;delaying payments to merchants while collecting customer payments for extended periods. “PDD would receive the order, arrange the drop ship, and then not pay its farmer suppliers for 500-600 days,” Burry said.The float once generated enough investment income to account for nearly all of the company’s profits. However, the model has faced growing challenges. Temu’s growth slowed after the U.S. closed a shipping loophole that allowed tariff-free imports, while competition intensified in China from JD.com and Alibaba.Meanwhile, Burry also raised concerns about the company’s financial disclosures. “PDD’s problem with disclosure is vexing,” he said, noting that the company provides little detail about revenue by geography, product, or business line.A short-seller report in 2018 alleged accounting discrepancies, though Burry said he believes the report likely overlooked part of the company’s complex structure. “Overall, I cannot call it fraud. Monday’s moves, triggered by a significant military escalation between the U.S. and Iran, added to the sharp selloff in Chinese tech stocks in recent months.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Ford’s Q4 adjusted EPS fell to $0.13, hit by supplier disruptions, tariffs, and EV pricing pressure.</li><li>The Model e EV unit is expected to lose $4–$4.5 billion in 2026.</li><li>BYD overtook Ford in global vehicle sales for the first time, highlighting mounting pressure from Chinese automakers.</li></ul>Ford&nbsp;Motor Co. shares&nbsp;rose slightly overnight despite a sharp fourth-quarter (Q4) earnings miss, as investors weighed a more stable 2026 outlook against a rapidly intensifying competitive threat from China.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Ford Q4 Print</h2>Ford <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/ford-fourth-quarter-earnings-2025/cZbUkTbR4pV">reported</a> adjusted earnings of $0.13 per share for Q4, below last year’s $0.39 and short of expectations. The carmaker blamed production disruptions from a fire at a Novelis aluminum supplier, higher tariff costs, and persistent pricing pressure in EVs. However, quarterly sales rose to $45.9 billion, beating estimates.Ford guided to full-year 2026 adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of $8 billion to $10 billion, in line with Wall Street forecasts and higher than the $6.8 billion generated last year. Most of that profit is expected to come from its commercial vehicle business, with EBIT projected at $6.5 billion to $7.5 billion. Gas and hybrid models are expected to contribute another $4 billion to $4.5 billion.The company also said its Model e unit is likely to post losses of $4 billion to $4.5 billion next year. It plans to increase capital spending to $9.5 billion to $10.5 billion and targets free cash flow of $5 billion to $6 billion.The quarter included $15.5 billion in special charges tied largely to Ford’s EV strategy reset, as demand cooled and policy support weakened. The company said another $7 billion in charges is expected across 2026 and 2027.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Ford Faces Growing Competition From China</h2>Meanwhile, Ford is facing increasing competition from Chinese automakers globally. China’s BYD overtook Ford in global vehicle sales for the first time last year as Ford’s wholesales fell nearly 2% in 2025 to just under 4.4 million vehicles, while BYD reported about 4.6 million.&nbsp;<img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/koyfin_20260211_124624827_png_06a912dca4.webp" alt="koyfin_20260211_124624827.png">Ford gained ground in the U.S., but lost share in Europe and especially China, where domestic players such as BYD, Xiaomi, and Geely are winning customers with lower-priced, tech-heavy EVs. XPeng made 20,011 deliveries, down 34.1% on an annual basis and plunging 46.7% from December.Meanwhile, Li Auto made 27,668 deliveries, marking its eighth straight year-on-year drop, while sales also slumped 37.5% from the previous month.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Nio’s Delivery Growth Fails To Lift Stock</h2>Nio’s delivery volume against that backdrop still stood out, at least when compared with the prior year. The firm said it delivered 27,182 vehicles in January 2026, up 96.1% from a year earlier. However, deliveries declined 43.5% from December, which weighed on investor sentiment.Of those deliveries, 20,894 were Nio-branded vehicles, 3,481 were from its family-oriented sub-brand Onvo, while 2,807 were from its small EV brand Firefly. Cumulative sales rose to 1.02 million as of the end of January, surpassing the one-million-vehicle milestone.<h2 class="st-heading-2">ES8 Emerges As The Standout</h2>Much of Nio’s January performance rested on a single model. The third-generation ES8 SUV delivered 17,646 units during the month, accounting for nearly 65% of total deliveries. This is a dramatic increase from the 446 units delivered in January last year, reflecting the rapid ramp-up following the model’s launch at Nio Day in September 2025.Even so, ES8 deliveries were down about 21% from December’s record 22,258 units, when the model became China’s best-selling large SUV, according to the company. Nio also said it recently delivered its 60,000th third-generation ES8, just two weeks after reaching the 50,000-unit milestone.Deliveries at Onvo fell more than 61% from December, while Firefly deliveries dropped over 60% month-on-month. The two carmakers are reportedly discussing how a potential partnership would work, and are considering ideas including Ford importing batteries from BYD to non-U.S. factories.Shares of F traded marginally in the green at the time of writing.<h2 class="st-heading-2">BYD’s EV And Battery Capacities</h2>BYD is the world’s largest EV maker. Unlike its American counterpart Tesla, BYD makes both plug-in hybrid, and battery-powered electric vehicles.The company makes most of its batteries in China but it is also building capacity in overseas plants. While BYD has made some batteries for commercial vehicles at its California bus-manufacturing plant, it hasn't yet made passenger car batteries in the U.S., WSJ noted.Meanwhile, Ford is also putting up a battery plant in Michigan, where it intends to build low-cost cells starting this year with the help of technology from Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) to power its future electric vehicles.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Ford’s Pivot Away From EVs</h2>The report of the new deal talks comes on the heels of Ford realigning its EV strategy last month, pivoting away from pure EVs, and towards hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.Ford said in December that it expects to incur $19.5 billion in EV-related charges after it killed several big EV models to stem losses from the segment.
