Morgan Stanley Reportedly Expects 4 Rate Cuts Through January, Says Fed Will Aim To Arrive At Neutral Rates ‘More Decisively’

According to a Bloomberg report, Morgan Stanley believes the Fed aims to arrive at neutral policy rates “more decisively” before it pauses to assess the impact of its rate cuts.

Current mortgage rates in the United States are now down to a low of almost a year, according to data from some of the biggest mortgage lenders in the U.S.Data from Freddie Mac shows that the average rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) fell to 6.35% as of Friday, down from 6.5% last week. The last time the mortgage rate for a 30-year home loan was lower than 6.35% was on October 10, 2024, according to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MORTGAGE30US">data</a> from the Federal Bank of St. Louis.U.S. Bank&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.usbank.com/home-loans/mortgage/mortgage-rates.html">data</a> shows that the mortgage rate for a 30-year FRM starts at 5.99%. Current Mortgage Rates: Home Loans Get Cheaper, Here’s What You Need To Know

Data from Freddie Mac shows that the average rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was 6.35% as of Friday, down from 6.5% last week.

U.S. consumer prices rose&nbsp;in line with expectations in August amid increasing economic uncertainty due to President Donald Trump’s tariff war.According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the consumer price index (CPI) rose&nbsp;2.9% on an annual basis before the seasonal adjustment.&nbsp;On a seasonally adjusted basis, CPI rose&nbsp;0.4% in August, after rising 0.2% in July.Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose&nbsp;0.3% in August, in line with a Dow Jones estimate, according to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.marketwatch.com/economy-politics/calendar">MarketWatch</a> data.The index for shelter rose 0.4% in August, and was the primary reason for the increase in the all-items basket during the month. The food index also rose 0.5%, while the energy index increased by 0.7%, driven by a 1.9% rise in the gasoline index.Regarding the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on inflation, former White House economist Jared Bernstein stated in a CNBC interview that the levies are being reflected in prices, but not yet significantly. “The tariffs are in the numbers, but they’re certainly not jumping out hair on fire at this point,” Bernstein said, according to a CNBC&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/12/cpi-inflation-report-july-2025.html">report</a>.Following the release of CPI data, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell two basis points to 4.005%, while the two-year Treasury yield fell four basis points to 3.49%.Meanwhile, U.S. equities gained in Thursday’s pre-market trade. CPI Report: Consumer Prices Rise 2.9% Annually In August, In Line With Expectations

Consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.4% in August on a seasonally adjusted basis, after rising 0.2% in July.

Carlyle Group’s co-founder and co-chairman, David Rubenstein, on Thursday reportedly said that a 50-basis-point interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve next week would scare the markets about the state of the U.S. economy.In an interview with CNBC, Rubenstein stated that the Fed’s monetary policy action next week will be on predictable lines. “Clearly, the Fed next week will obviously do something we all expect. I don’t think it’s going to be a surprise,” he said.As for the quantum of the interest rate cut, Rubenstein said he believes the central bank will stick with the more widely expected 25-basis-point cut instead of a larger 50-basis-point cut.“It will have to be 25 basis points. If the Fed were to go 50 basis points, it would scare the markets that the economy is weaker than what the markets think it is, and I think it would be too much for the market to absorb,” Rubenstein added.As for the Fed’s dual mandate of achieving maximum employment and price stability, Rubenstein argued that the central bank focuses on the aspect that is relatively more out of line than its goals. A measure of wholesale prices fell in August, coming in lower than Wall Street estimates,&nbsp;following a rise in July.The producer price index, a gauge of prices that producers receive for their goods and services in the open market, edged&nbsp;lower by 0.1% in August, after rising&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/ppi-report-wholesale-inflation-surges-to-3-3-in-july/chsRSI7RdOJ">0.9% in July</a>.On an annual basis, headline inflation saw a 2.6% increase in August, compared to 3.1% in July.Core PPI, which excludes food, energy, and trade services, moved up by 0.3% in August, marking the fourth consecutive increase, the BLS report stated. On an annual basis,&nbsp;core PPI rose 2.8%, which is the largest 12-month advance since climbing 3.5% in March 2025.Goods prices increased by 0.1% in August, while services prices witnessed a 0.2% fall during the month.Within goods, the BLS noted that prices of tobacco surged nearly 2.3%, emerging as a major driver of goods inflation in August. Indexes of beef and veal, processed poultry, printed circuit assemblies, boards, modules, and modems, and electric power fuel rose during the month, while utility natural gas, fresh and dry vegetables, chicken, eggs, and copper base scrap declined.Regarding the decline in service costs, the agency noted that 75% of the decrease in the index in August could be attributed to a 3.9% decline in margins for machinery and vehicle wholesaling. Indexes for professional and commercial equipment wholesaling, chemicals and allied products wholesaling, furniture retailing, food and alcohol retailing, and data processing also declined.Meanwhile, U.S. equities gained in Wednesday’s pre-market trading session as investors digested inflation data. PPI Report: Wholesale Inflation Falls 0.1% In August

US Mortgage Rates Decline To 11-Month Low As Treasury Yields Slip: Report

According to a Bloomberg report citing data from the Mortgage Bankers Association, the interest rate on a 30-year mortgage declined by 15 basis points to 6.49% for the week ended September 5.

The Labor Department on Tuesday revised estimates of nonfarm payroll additions between April 2024 and March 2025, reflecting a decrease of 911,000 jobs during the period, indicating a weaker labor market than previously reported.The Bureau of Labor Statistics report showed a higher-than-average adjustment to jobs data during annual revisions. The report showed a downward revision of 0.6% in total nonfarm employment during the period from April 2024 to March 2025, compared to an average of 0.2% over the last 10 years.The BLS report covers nearly nine months of the Biden administration’s term, and a little over two months since Trump took the oath on Jan. 20, 2025. While the data itself does not reflect the current labor market situation, it underscores that past job growth in the U.S. was not as strong as previously reported.Tuesday’s BLS report is preliminary, and a final revision is scheduled for February 2026, the department stated. Job Growth Sees Downward Revision By 911,000 Through March, Signaling  Weaker Labor Market Than Previously Reported

The annual adjustment by the BLS revealed a downward revision of 0.6% in total nonfarm employment, which is higher than the 0.2% average over the past decade.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yields edged lower on Monday morning as investors await the release of key inflation data to gauge the probability and quantum of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate cuts in September.At the time of writing, the 10-year Treasury yields were down three basis points to 4.055%.
