Hammack said she supported the central bank’s decision at the meeting.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Hammack’s Rationale</h2>Hammack reportedly said that instead of focusing on fine tuning the interest rate, she would prefer to err on the side of patience as officials wait to see the impact of the recent rate reductions and watch how the economy performs, adding that “a steady funds rate would reflect positive economic developments.”As per the report, Hammack said the economic outlook was optimistic but also noted that inflation remains “too high,” adding that it was important for price pressures to ease even as it looks likely for inflation to remain around 3% this year.“Growth this year should get a boost from easier financial conditions, recent interest rate reductions, and fiscal support, among other factors,” Hammack reportedly said.About employment, the Fed president said that the economy was in a ‘low-hire, low-fire’ period, indicated through official data as well as from businesses.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Economic Data</h2>According to data from The Commerce Department released earlier on Tuesday, U.S. retail sales in December remained unchanged, coming in much weaker than expected as eight out of 13 categories posted declines, suggesting a slowdown in consumer spending as well as the economy in the upcoming year.Meanwhile, U.S. citizens are expecting inflation to be lower in the near-term, according to a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York that was released on Monday. According to the latest Survey of Consumer Expectations (SCE), the NY Fed said inflation expectations one year from now stood at 3.1% in January compared with 3.4% in December, while at the three- and five-year-ahead horizons, expectations held steady at 3%.The markets are looking forward to the January jobs data to be released on Wednesday and the next consumer price index report scheduled to be released on Friday.On the markets’ front, U.S. equities were mixed on Tuesday. When companies talk about $200 billion in capital expenditures, markets should scrutinize payback periods, competitive dynamics, and whether durable moats can be built in an environment where technology is evolving at breakneck speed,” he said.Last week, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) laid out a&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/amzn-stock-falls-below-long-term-moving-average-slumps-premarket/cZbFfDJR4nC">$200 billion</a> capital expenditure plan for 2026, which is an increase of over 50% compared to its 2025 capex. The company cited strong demand for its existing offerings and opportunities like AI, chips, robotics, and low Earth orbit satellites.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Huang Says AI Capex Surge Is Justified</h2>Siegel was referring to Huang’s interview last week with&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/06/nvidia-rises-7percent-as-ceo-says-660-billion-capex-buildout-is-sustainable.html">CNBC</a>, where the Nvidia chief stated that the largest infrastructure buildout in humanity’s history was justified and sustainable.″The reason for that is because all of these companies’ cash flows are going to start rising,” Huang said.He stated that AI companies and hyperscalers can capitalize on the “sky high” demand for computing power to make money. “Anthropic is making great money. OpenAI is making great money. If they could have twice as much compute, the revenues would go up four times as much,” he added.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Rotation Out Of Mega-Cap Tech Stocks</h2>Meanwhile, Siegel said that investors are skeptical of the soaring AI capex, which was visible as several “Magnificent 7” stocks cracked last week. Amazon shares fell nearly 15% in the previous five trading sessions, while Alphabet’s Class A shares declined around 7%. Meta and Microsoft fell 4% and 2%, respectively.“This is not a market being propped up by only a handful of mega-cap technology names. The rotation is real, it is persistent, and it is healthy,” he added. The economist said that the leadership rotation will continue amid these investor concerns.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Pullback In Gold, Silver Not A Fundamental Breakdown</h2>Siegel also said that the recent decline in prices of gold and silver is a classic case of a pullback toward the trend rather than a fundamental breakdown.He added that the longer-term trend lines in gold and silver remain intact. “Whether recent highs prove to be multi-year peaks like 1980 is unknowable, but nothing in the price action suggests a structural end to the story,” he said.While spot gold prices fell to as low as $4,666 per troy ounce after scaling an all-time high of $5,595, spot silver prices are currently down more than 3% over the past week. However, from a record high of $121.67 per troy ounce, spot silver prices are down nearly 32%.Meanwhile, U.S. equities gained in Tuesday’s pre-market trade. It’s an unusual set of circumstances,” Hassett said during an interview with CNBC.He also noted that there is no question that the U.S. economy is currently in the midst of the biggest productivity boom since the 1990s. Hassett’s comments come ahead of the U.S. employment report that is due to be released on Wednesday, and the weekly jobless claims report due Thursday.<h2 class="st-heading-2">AI-Led Productivity Boom</h2>The NEC Director said that the introduction of the internet and AI&nbsp;has a similar impact on economic data. “AI is making it so that every company, from Caterpillar on up, is finding that it’s more productive when it does stuff. And with higher productivity, they get higher profits,” Hassett said.The question, he noted, is what will happen to jobs as productivity rises. “Productivity skyrockets, profit skyrockets, GDP skyrockets, but then all of a sudden, you’re making 20 widgets with one fewer person, and then that person has to find a job,” he added, noting that job transitions could happen.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Hassett On Likelihood Of Government Shutdown</h2>Hassett also said he feels the “game” of the government shutdown is&nbsp;done with, even though a few things need to be ironed out between Republicans and Democrats.He added that he hasn’t spoken to anyone on either side of the aisle who is interested in another shutdown.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Layoffs Highest Since 2009</h2>Meanwhile, layoffs in January hit the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/layoffs-in-january-highest-since-2009-hiring-lowest-on-record/cZbZe3wR4V0">highest levels</a> since 2009, with U.S.-based employers announcing 108,435 job cuts during the month, according to the latest report by consulting firm Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas.The firm stated that layoffs last month were the highest since January 2009, when 241,749 job cuts were announced.Employers also announced 5,306 hiring plans in January, which was the lowest total for the month since Challenger began tracking hiring plans in 2009.U.S. equities declined in Monday’s opening trade. (META) shares and the decline in Microsoft Corp. (MSFT). Meta shares have surged nearly 9% over the past month, while Microsoft shares have declined over 10%.“My central view remains that this is shaping up to be the year of the AI user, not the AI producer. Capital spending will continue, but returns will increasingly accrue to firms that deploy AI to boost productivity rather than those merely selling the picks and shovels,” he said.Siegel added that President Donald Trump’s tariff policies remain a “wildcard,” but they are not a dominant risk. “Warsh at the helm is a net positive for both bonds and equities, and I remain optimistic about the medium-term outlook,” he said.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Warsh’s Prior Experience</h2>Warsh, a former Fed governor, is seen as a policy hawk with close ties to Wall Street. The Labor Department, which houses the BLS, was funded only through Jan. 30.While the Senate has voted to extend funding, the measure must still pass the House, which is scheduled to return on Monday.To avoid a prolonged shutdown, the Senate separated DHS funding from other agencies and approved a two-week stopgap after reaching a deal with the White House to negotiate Democratic demands. President Donald Trump’s administration agreed to temporarily fund DHS at current levels.The BLS, still recovering from last year’s record shutdown, also produces CPI and other key economic data that may be affected.Meanwhile, U.S. equities rose in Monday’s mid-day trade. At the time of writing, the <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF </a>(SPY), which tracks the S&amp;P 500 index, was up by 0.66%, the <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/QQQ">Invesco QQQ Trust ETF</a> (QQQ) rose 1%, and the <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/DIA">SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust</a> (DIA) climbed 0.97%.
