Strategy, which entered the Nasdaq 100 last December under the index’s technology classification, was not affected by the changes.<h2 class="st-heading-2">MSCI Weighs New Rules For Digital Asset Treasuries</h2>The index provider is considering a proposal that would reclassify firms holding more than 50% of their reserves in cryptocurrencies, a move that could result in their removal from MSCI benchmarks. Lee added that Strategy is currently “the 17th most traded stock in the U.S.,” while Bitmine ranks around 39th. Everything else, he said, represents only a sliver of daily turnover.Lee said investors make a mistake in treating DATs trading below NAV as bargains. In equities, he noted, sectors like biotech have long featured “net nets” and yet those names rarely outperform. “You never buy the cheapest stock in the sector. Strategy uses its Bitcoin holdings to support revenue-generating products, such as Bitcoin-backed credit services, rather than passively holding tokens. Classifying companies solely by the composition of their balance sheets, it said, ignores business function and introduces distortions across sectors.Strategy said the proposed threshold is “arbitrary, discriminatory, and unworkable", as asset values fluctuate and accounting standards differ. It added that other industries with concentrated asset bases, such as oil, timber, or real estate, are not subject to similar limits.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Implementation Challenges And Policy Risks</h2>The company warned that applying a fixed digital-asset threshold would require MSCI to monitor volatile market prices and continuously reclassify companies, creating uncertainty for issuers and index-tracking investors. It argued that such a rule would pull MSCI into policy-making territory rather than maintaining the index provider’s stated goal of neutrality.Strategy also said excluding digital-asset-heavy firms could limit innovation and weaken the U.S. position in early-stage financial technologies, particularly as Bitcoin-linked products and balance-sheet strategies spread globally.The firm recommended that MSCI pause the proposal and adopt a more consultative process, similar to the discussions that led to the “Communication Services” sector realignment several years ago. The drop is significant because,&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/strategy-mstr-preferred-stock-dividend-ae1767fc">according</a> to Barron's, Strategy has stacked around $8 billion of preferred shares on top of its Bitcoin stack, with yearly dividend commitments exceeding $700 million.Investor’s Business Daily&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.investors.com/news/mstr-stock-strategy-bitcoin-winter-reserve-fund/">estimates</a> that interest plus preferred dividends now total roughly $800 million a year, and&nbsp;said the share sale raised about $1.4 billion, which is enough to cover around 21 months of those cash outflows.&nbsp;In a conversation with Cointelegraph, Daniel Batten, a technology investment coach with a specialization&nbsp;in Bitcoin,&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/gazza_jenks/status/1995783660256063609?s=20">said</a> he was “not concerned at all”, given Strategy’s “mNAV disappear[ed] well below one to see the cost basis”.&nbsp;Strategy’s&nbsp;mNAV, or market-based Net Asset Value, is an indicator that helps investors determine a fund's underlying value by assessing its market-reflectivity.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Gauge The Risk For MSTR And Bitcoin-Exposed Investors</h2>Previously, on November 28, Strategy-CEO Phong Le&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/mstr-announces-1-44-billion-usd-reserve-as-btc-holdings-hit-650-000/cLI7XmfREim">explained</a> that the only situation where Strategy would have to sell its Bitcoin holding would be if MSTR trades below 1x mNAV or if it cannot obtain equity or debt, signaling that external financing is not an option anymore. Phong Le said, “Strategy would only sell Bitcoin as a last resort if mNAV fell below 1 and capital markets shut.”&nbsp;Currently, the company's mNAV is 1.17, over the threshold for such conditions. Strategy’s total Bitcoin holdings were acquired for $48.38 billion, reflecting an average purchase price of $74,436 per bitcoin.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Conditions That Could Trigger Bitcoin Sale</h2>CEO Phong Le outlined in a “What Bitcoin Did” podcast that Strategy could be forced to sell its core Bitcoin holdings under at least one set of circumstances.&nbsp;First, the company’s stock would need to trade below 1x mNAV, meaning its market capitalization falls beneath the value of its Bitcoin holdings.
