It enables peer-to-peer electronic cash transactions without intermediaries like banks or governments, operating on a blockchain secured by Proof of Work mining and the SHA-256 cryptographic algorithm.   With a fixed supply cap of 21 million coins and programmatic halvings every four years that reduce miner rewards, Bitcoin is designed as a deflationary digital asset often called "digital gold." Its value stems from solving the double-spending problem without trusted intermediaries, creating the first truly scarce digital asset with censorship resistance and permissionless access that no government, corporation, or individual can control.  Bitcoin operates as a decentralized peer-to-peer network where transactions are recorded on a public ledger called the blockchain, distributed across thousands of computers globally. Transactions are grouped into blocks added approximately every 10 minutes through mining, where specialized computers compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles.   Bitcoin has achieved mainstream adoption through multiple vectors. The January 2024 SEC approval of 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs opened Bitcoin investment to traditional finance participants, and corporations like Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) are using Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset to protect against currency debasement, offering MSTR holders amplified exposure to Bitcoin.   The Bitcoin ecosystem continues to evolve with innovations like Ordinals, which emerged in January 2023 to enable NFT-like functionality directly on Bitcoin, and BRC-20 tokens, an experimental standard for creating fungible tokens using Ordinal inscriptions. Its transition to Proof of Stake in September 2022 reduced energy consumption by over 99%, addressing environmental concerns while strengthening network security.  The network operates through thousands of independent validator nodes that process transactions and execute smart contracts on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that automatically carry out agreements when conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries like banks or brokers.   Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. The asset is increasingly adopted by traditional institutions, with publicly traded companies adding ETH to corporate treasuries to generate staking yields while maintaining blockchain exposure, and in 2024, the SEC approved spot Ethereum ETFs, allowing traditional investors to gain exposure through conventional brokerage accounts.  Ethereum's roadmap focuses on dramatically increasing transaction capacity to over 100,000 per second, reducing confirmation times, and enhancing decentralization while maintaining security against future threats like quantum computing.

The platform’s native token, SOL, serves as the primary currency for paying transaction fees, participating in network governance, and securing the system through staking.   Solana has also seen significant institutional adoption ranging from spot Solana ETFs to major partnerships including Visa's 2025 launch of USDC settlement on the network and the tokenization of public equity by firms like Galaxy Digital.

The firm cited weaker cryptocurrency prices and a compression in Strategy’s premium relative to its Bitcoin holdings. It expects Strategy to report an unrealized loss in Q4, driven by Bitcoin’s decline during the period.&nbsp;In January, Strategy was&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/bitcoin-hoarder-strategy-reveals-1744-billion-unrealized-loss-fourth-quarter-2026-01-05/">reportedly</a> sitting on an unrealized loss of $17.44 billion in the fourth quarter due to Bitcoin’s slump, which led to the value of the company’s stockpile taking a hit. For the year 2025, the company reported a $5.40 billion unrealized loss on digital assets. At the time, it also slashed its earnings forecast for 2025, citing a weak run in bitcoin.While Canaccord continues to view Strategy as a long-term store-of-value vehicle, it noted that Bitcoin has increasingly traded like a risk asset over the past year. He compared the market’s fixation on Bitcoin to similar reactions seen in gold and silver with sudden price swings distracting investors from company earnings and fundamentals.He hedged his statements, saying that he owns some amount of Bitcoin himself, even though he did not disclose how much. Strategy, which entered the Nasdaq 100 last December under the index’s technology classification, was not affected by the changes.<h2 class="st-heading-2">MSCI Weighs New Rules For Digital Asset Treasuries</h2>The index provider is considering a proposal that would reclassify firms holding more than 50% of their reserves in cryptocurrencies, a move that could result in their removal from MSCI benchmarks. Meanwhile,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MSTR">MSTR’s stock</a> dipped 1.2%, with retail sentiment in the ‘bearish’ zone in the last 24 hours.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Most DATs Trading Under NAV Value</h2>Lee said roughly 90% of all DATs now trade below NAV, and most see little meaningful activity. “Between Bitmine and Strategy, that’s 92% of all trading volume,” he said. Lee added that Strategy is currently “the 17th most traded stock in the U.S.,” while Bitmine ranks around 39th. Everything else, he said, represents only a sliver of daily turnover.Lee said investors make a mistake in treating DATs trading below NAV as bargains. In equities, he noted, sectors like biotech have long featured “net nets” and yet those names rarely outperform. “You never buy the cheapest stock in the sector. You buy the strongest,” he said. “Imagine saying, ‘I don’t want to buy Nvidia — I’ll just buy the 100th-best.’”<h2 class="st-heading-2">MSTR Did ‘The Smart Thing’</h2>Lee said Strategy’s recent stock price volatility is largely a function of its tight correlation to Bitcoin, not its underlying business. “There’s nothing he can do, because he’s always going to be high beta to Bitcoin,” Lee said of CEO Michael Saylor. But he argued the firm is prepared for downturns.“They have now announced a cash reserve of $1.4 billion — smart,” Lee said, adding that Fundstrat has pursued a similar approach. “We’ve been running cash the entire time… we don’t want anyone to ever think we’re not going to be around.”Lee said Bitmine remains structurally stronger than peers because of its ETH treasury. The firm holds roughly 3.7 million ETH, far more than all other DATs combined. “The rest… don’t even own a million,” he said. That position, and its staking yield, create what Lee views as a significant strategic moat. “I don’t think Bitmine would ever sell its E,” he said. “There’s no reason to be selling.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Bitcoin No Longer Following Four-Year Cycle</h2>Lee also questioned whether Bitcoin continues to adhere to the four-year halving cycle long cited by market veterans. With long-term holders selling heavily this year, he said, historical patterns may no longer apply.“If Bitcoin makes a new high in January, there’s no four-year cycle,” he said. Fundstrat’s Tom Lee Warns ‘Too Many DATs’ Are Chasing Too Little Trading Volume 

In an interview with Rug Radio, Lee said roughly 80 DATs now exist, but about 90% trade below NAV, reflecting an overcrowded market.

Retail sentiment around the apex cryptocurrency fell to ‘bearish’ from ‘neutral’ over the past week, as chatter dipped to ‘low’ from ‘normal’ levels.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Strategy Pushes Back On MSCI’s 50% Digital Asset Limit</h2>The company said it should not be grouped with investment funds because its digital asset treasury (DAT) strategy is tied to operating activities. Strategy uses its Bitcoin holdings to support revenue-generating products, such as Bitcoin-backed credit services, rather than passively holding tokens. Classifying companies solely by the composition of their balance sheets, it said, ignores business function and introduces distortions across sectors.Strategy said the proposed threshold is “arbitrary, discriminatory, and unworkable", as asset values fluctuate and accounting standards differ. It added that other industries with concentrated asset bases, such as oil, timber, or real estate, are not subject to similar limits.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Implementation Challenges And Policy Risks</h2>The company warned that applying a fixed digital-asset threshold would require MSCI to monitor volatile market prices and continuously reclassify companies, creating uncertainty for issuers and index-tracking investors. It argued that such a rule would pull MSCI into policy-making territory rather than maintaining the index provider’s stated goal of neutrality.Strategy also said excluding digital-asset-heavy firms could limit innovation and weaken the U.S. position in early-stage financial technologies, particularly as Bitcoin-linked products and balance-sheet strategies spread globally.The firm recommended that MSCI pause the proposal and adopt a more consultative process, similar to the discussions that led to the “Communication Services” sector realignment several years ago.
