Miners today are mining Bitcoin using ASIC chip dedicated to only mining Bitcoin, and the hash rate has shot up to peta hashes.  Being the first successful online cryptography currency, Bitcoin has inspired other alternative currencies such as Litecoin, Peercoin, Primecoin, and so on.  The cryptocurrency then took off with the innovation of the turing-complete smart contract by Ethereum which led to the development of other amazing projects such as EOS, Tron, and even crypto-collectibles such as CryptoKitties.

Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. The SPDR Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE), which tracks energy firms in the S&amp;P 500, has declined 3.9% this week amid a weakness in oil prices.The ETF, which has approximately $26.52 billion in assets under management, is on track to record its worst weekly decline since late May. The declines follow a more than 7% drop in both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate crude prices this week, due to concerns about oversupply. The producer group has already brought back 2.5 million barrels per day (bpd) worth of nameplate capacity this year, which has pushed oil prices lower.“If OPEC+ does go ahead and announce a 500,000 bpd increase this weekend, it’s likely a big enough increase to send crude oil lower again, initially to support at $58.00, before a test of this year’s lows $55.00 area,” IG analyst Tony Sycamore said. Concerns over the U.S. government shutdown curtailing economic activity and the resumption of Iraq’s Kurdish oil exports are also weighing on the crude price, he added.Among individual stocks, Occidental Petroleum has fallen 6.8% this week, following its agreement to sell its Oxychem unit to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway for $9.7 billion. However, analysts were not enthusiastic about the mega deal due to its timing.Roth MKM analysts stated that while the sale would help the oil and gas producer reduce its debt, it could negatively impact free cash flow growth in the coming years, as the unit was expected to contribute significantly to expansion.However, HSBC analysts upgraded the stock to 'buy' from 'hold' after noting that the share pullback from disappointment in the OxyChem sale price "presents a great buying opportunity."Separately, oil prices edged higher on Friday following a fire at a Chevron refinery in Los Angeles County. This Energy ETF Is Heading Toward Its Worst Week In Four Months — Can A Late Rebound Save The Day?

Oil prices gained marginally in volatile trading on Wednesday as investors assessed the commentary by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell as well as U.S. President Donald Trump’s shift in stance around the Ukraine War.Benchmark Brent crude prices rose 0.4% to $67.88 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate prices also gained 0.3% cents to $63.64 per barrel at 5.10 a.m. ET. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits about the <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/USO">United States Oil Fund</a> (USO) was in the ‘bullish’ territory at the time of writing.Both benchmarks climbed by more than $1 a barrel on Tuesday as a deal to resume exports from Iraq's Kurdistan stalled, halting pipeline shipments of approximately 230,000 barrels per day of oil from the region to Turkey, following requests from two key producers for debt repayment guarantees. Pipeline flows have been stopped since March 2023.Later in the day, President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine can reclaim all its territories, marking a reversal of his earlier stance, where he urged Kyiv to cede some of its territories to Russia. According to an AFP report, the Kremlin replied that there was “no alternative” for Russia than to continue its offensive on Ukraine that it launched in 2022.Trump has already urged Europe to scale back their purchases of Russian energy and floated higher tariffs on the buyers of Russian oil, including Russia and India.Separately, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell hinted that the U.S. central bank could take a hawkish approach to interest rate cuts. “Near-term risks to inflation are tilted to the upside and risks to employment to the downside — a challenging situation. Two-sided risks mean that there is no risk-free path,” Powell said in a speech on Tuesday.The U.S. dollar also advanced, capping some gains in oil prices. A stronger dollar makes the commodity more expensive for overseas buyers.Oil traders are also keenly awaiting the weekly U.S. crude inventory data. Oil Prices Gain In Choppy Trading As Traders Assess Comments From Powell, Trump

Oil prices fell on Thursday as investors dissected U.S. crude inventory data after an expected rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve.Benchmark Brent crude prices fell 0.5% to $67.56 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate prices also declined 40 cents to $63.64 per barrel at 3.42 a.m. ET. However, markets remain divided on how many future rate cuts the Fed might announce this year.In his press conference, Powell emphasized the central bank’s tough ask of balancing its goal in an unusual situation, although he expressed concerns about the weakening labor market. Earlier in his speech, he called the September cut a “risk-management” cut, with the market interpreting the phrase as meaning “meeting-by-meeting” decision on future cuts."What caught markets’ attention was not just the easing, but Powell’s downbeat message," Phillip Nova analyst Priyanka Sachdeva said, according to a Reuters report, after saying that markets have already priced in two more rate cuts this year."He stressed weakening job markets and inflation that remains sticky, making the cut look more like risk-management than a demand booster," she noted.Investors were also concerned about oil demand in the world’s largest economy. Oil Prices Dip Despite Fed Rate Cut As Focus Shifts To US Demand

Oil prices slipped in early trading on Wednesday as investors braced themselves for the outcome of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting.Benchmark Brent crude prices fell 0.5% to $68.16 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate prices also declined 0.5% to $64.21 per barrel at 4.13 a.m. ET. According to a Reuters News report, Russia's oil pipeline Transneft had warned producers that they might have to cut output as several refineries went online.ING Commodities analysts noted that recent claims by Ukraine that it attacked the Saratov refinery in its latest strike on Russian energy facilities might help create a floor for oil prices at lower levels.&nbsp;However, oil prices were under pressure as concerns over U.S. demand mounted after mixed fuel inventory data. According to American Petroleum Institute data, U.S. gasoline inventories fell by 700,000 barrels, while distillate stocks increased by 1.9 million barrels.Oil traders are eagerly awaiting the Federal Reserve’s decision on benchmark interest rates, expected to be announced later on Wednesday. The U.S. central bank is widely expected to deliver a 25-basis-point rate cut amid weakness in the labor market.“The focus is on whether there will be two or three rate cuts this year,” IG Commodities analyst Tony Sycamore said in a note, including the probable cut on Wednesday. “Fed Chair Jerome Powell's tone on economic risks is crucial. Oil Prices Pull Back Ahead Of Key Fed Interest Rate Call

Oil prices eased after gaining in early trading, after concerns over further sanctions on Russia eased, with investors bracing themselves for the Federal Reserve’s decision on the benchmark interest rates.Benchmark Brent crude prices fell 16 cents to $67.28 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate prices also declined 0.3% to $63.14 per barrel at 4.36 a.m. ET. Oil Prices Ease After Traders Await Fed Rate Decision Amid EU Delays Sanctions

Oil prices gained in early trading on Monday as Ukraine continued to hit Russian energy facilities, raising concerns over crude supply.Benchmark Brent crude prices gained 0.5% to $66.17 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate prices also advanced 0.5% to $62.99 per barrel at 3.44 a.m. ET. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits about the <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/USO">United States Oil Fund</a> (USO) was in the ‘extremely bearish’ territory at the time of writing.Over the weekend, Ukraine launched hundreds of drones at Russia, hitting the Kirishinefteorgsintez refinery, one of the two biggest refineries in the country, according to a Reuters News report.The refinery processes 17.7 million metric tons per year, or 355,000 barrels per day, of Russian crude, which is equivalent to 6.4% of the country’s total output, the report added. While Ukraine claimed the attack was largely successful, the Russians did not disclose whether it had caused any damage to the facility.The Ukrainian assault followed a strike at Russia’s largest oil exporting terminal, Primorsk, which ships over 1.1 million bpd of crude. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reportedly said that the attack had caused ‘significant damage.’This comes at a time when the U.S. is mulling a fresh round of sanctions on the buyers of Russian oil.
