The firm said Stellantis shares its valuation appeal, identifying the most undervalued areas of the European auto industry.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Goldman Flags Market Pressure&nbsp;</h2>Goldman said European automakers face growing pressure as Chinese manufacturers expand globally and battery electric vehicle momentum accelerates. The firm added that European Union tariffs, currency swings, and tightening emissions rules are adding further strain. Goldman noted that BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Renault now trade at negative industrial stub valuations, which it called “premature,” and said the premium segment remains the most undervalued part of the market.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Automakers Goldman Sees As Attractive Value Opportunities</h2>Goldman highlighted several automakers that it believes offer meaningful upside. The company initiated BMW with a ‘Buy’ rating and a 112 euro price target, implying a 32% upside. Mercedes-Benz was also initiated with a ‘Buy’ rating and a 74 euro price target, representing a 30% upside. Goldman said it likes both BMW and Mercedes-Benz for their “healthy” balance sheets and “shareholder-friendly” capital allocation frameworks.The bank initiated Ferrari with a ‘Buy’ rating and a $454 price target, giving the stock a 35% upside. Goldman said Ferrari’s higher-priced Special Series volumes support stronger selling prices and growth.Goldman also said Renault offers the same “attractive value” seen across premium automakers. The firm began coverage with a ‘Neutral’ rating and a 36-euro price target, implying a 5% upside.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Automakers Goldman Views More Cautiously</h2>Goldman initiated coverage of Volkswagen with a ‘Neutral’ rating and a 106-euro price target, giving it a 12% upside. Shares of General Motors and Ford fell on Thursday as major automakers warned that a deepening semiconductor disruption tied to a dispute between China and the Dutch government could soon hit U.S. and European vehicle production.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/GM">General Motors’ stock</a> slipped 0.8% to close at $57.34 on Thursday, while&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/F">Ford’s stock</a> edged 0.2% lower to $11.74.&nbsp;Automakers Warn Of Supply Chain RisksThe European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) said carmakers and suppliers had been notified by chipmaker Nexperia that it could no longer guarantee deliveries, warning that manufacturing could be significantly disrupted. The notice comes as automakers already face supply-chain pressure from tariffs, foreign competition, and softening demand, according to a Reuters&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/automaker-group-warns-nexperia-chip-supply-issue-could-quickly-disrupt-us-2025-10-17/">report</a>.In the U.S., the trade group Alliance for Automotive Innovation, whose members represent automakers such as GM and Ford as well as Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Stellantis and other companies, urged both governments to resolve the issue quickly before it worsens.&nbsp;John Bozzella, the group’s CEO, said if chip shipments don’t resume soon, auto production in the U.S. and elsewhere will be disrupted with consequences for other parts of the economy.Some automakers said that U.S. production could be affected as early as next month. The chips made by Nexperia, although not technically advanced, are produced in large volumes and are essential for manufacturing vehicle parts and components.Nexperia At Center Of DisputeThe dispute began after the Dutch government moved on Sept. 30 to take control of Nexperia, a Chinese-owned chipmaker, citing national security worries about technology potentially flowing to its parent company, Wingtech, which is already under U.S. export restrictions.&nbsp;Just days later, on Oct. 4, China’s commerce ministry struck back, blocking Nexperia’s Chinese operations and subcontractors from exporting certain parts and subassemblies.Carmakers Brace For FalloutStellantis, whose brands include Jeep, Peugeot, and Fiat, said it was collaborating with Nexperia and other suppliers to assess potential impacts and develop mitigation measures. GM, Ford Stocks Slip As China-Dutch Chip Dispute Over Nexperia Sparks Fresh Supply Chain Fears

The dispute erupted after the Dutch government seized control of Chinese-owned Nexperia over security concerns, triggering retaliation from Beijing and raising fears of another supply shock for the auto industry.

U.S. President Donald Trump said in a late-night Truth Social post on Thursday that the country will impose a 25% tariff on all heavy truck imports starting Oct. 1, a move he said is meant to protect domestic makers such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner and Mack Trucks from “unfair outside competition.”“We need our Truckers to be financially healthy and strong, for many reasons, but above all else, for National Security purposes,”&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115267382531822964">Trump wrote</a>.Shares of Paccar, parent to Kenworth and Peterbilt, gained more than 5% in after-hours trading following the news. Other competitors in the heavy truck space include Daimler Truck, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Volvo. While Freightliner is owned by Mercedes-Benz, Mack Trucks is owned by Volvo.The White House and Commerce Department have yet to spell out how the new tariffs will be rolled out, even though Trump’s deadline is less than a week away. The timing overlaps with an ongoing Section 232 investigation into imports of medium- and heavy-duty trucks, a national security review that could reshape the cost structure of the $50 billion U.S. heavy truck industry, according to a Reuters&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/us-truck-makers-look-cover-trumps-tariffs-raise-costs-2025-08-26/">report</a>.American truck makers are already under pressure from 50% tariffs on imported steel, aluminum and copper derivatives, along with extra costs for parts that don’t qualify under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Competitors like Daimler and Volkswagen’s Traton unit have managed to avoid many of those costs by producing in Mexico, where qualifying trucks can enter the U.S. duty-free.Volvo and its Mack unit, which&nbsp;builds trucks in Virginia and Pennsylvania, say U.S. production is more expensive than in Mexico, where parts and materials are cheaper. Paccar recently said that tariffs added $75 million to costs in the third quarter. ACT Research estimates tariffs on imported components add 2% to 4% to the cost of every truck built in the U.S.The U.S. heavy truck market is valued at approximately $51.6 billion this year and is projected to reach $71.8 billion by 2030, according to Mordor Intelligence. Trump Imposes 25% Tariff On Heavy Truck Imports To Protect US Makers — Paccar Stock Jumps After-Hours 

The White House has not yet detailed how the tariffs will be rolled out, even as they overlap with a broader national security review of truck imports.

Chinese EV major BYD widened its European lead over Tesla last month, selling more than three times as many cars as the previous year to outpace the U.S. rival for the second consecutive month.&nbsp;BYD’s registrations jumped 201% in August, for a 1.3% market share across the EU, against Tesla’s 1.2% after its sales slumped 36.6%, Reuters&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/byd-outsells-tesla-eu-second-month-stellantis-returns-sales-growth-2025-09-25/">reported</a>, citing data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).It was a mixed month for Europe’s traditional automakers. Stellantis returned to growth for the first time since early 2024, with sales up 2.2% in August. Volkswagen registrations rose 4.8% and Renault gained 7.8%. Overall, car sales across the EU increased 5.3%.Buyers kept moving towards electrified vehicles, with battery-electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars accounting for more than 62% of registrations, compared with just under 53% a year earlier.Tesla’s challenges ran deeper than the EU average. Data from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) showed its&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/tesla-sales-fall-germany-european-markets-continue-to-decline/chwTUgeRd8Z">sales in the country dropped 39% in August</a> to 1,441 units, even as overall EV sales there jumped 46%.&nbsp;According to National Auto Association data, Tesla also lost ground in France, where sales fell 47% to 1,331 units, and in Belgium, which saw a 61% decline to 585. In Denmark, registrations dropped 42% to 473. So far this year, Tesla sales have declined by 39% in France, 56% in Belgium, and 54% in Denmark.One bright spot was Norway, where Tesla sold 3,014 cars in August, up 21% from last year. BYD Widens Lead Over Tesla In Europe As Sales Triple; Stellantis Returns To Growth After Year-Long Slump

Global automakers are reportedly relying more on Chinese technology to fast-track electric vehicles, with Ford, Toyota, Renault and Volkswagen joining Audi in adopting Chinese EV platforms, software and powertrains to cut costs and shorten timelines.Audi’s turning point came in 2021, when its executives were stunned by the Zeekr 001, a long-range EV with European styling. “The Zeekr 001 back then shocked quite everyone,” said Stefan Poetzl, president of SAIC Audi Sales and Marketing, according to a Reuters&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/china-inside-how-chinese-ev-tech-is-reshaping-global-auto-design-2025-09-11/">report</a>.&nbsp;In response, Audi partnered with SAIC to develop the Audi E5 Sportback, built in just 18 months with Chinese batteries, electric drive systems, infotainment and advanced driver assistance. The $33,000 model will be delivered to Chinese buyers this month.Other global players are pursuing similar strategies. Toyota is co-developing China-dedicated models with Guangzhou-based GAC, while Volkswagen has expanded plans with Xpeng that cover both EV and fuel models.&nbsp;Renault built the Dacia Spring on a Dongfeng platform and is apparently developing a new electric Twingo in Shanghai with support from Launch Design. Ford is actively seeking a Chinese partner, with CEO Jim Farley praising local models such as Xiaomi’s SU7 sedan.Stellantis has already taken the step of licensing technology: CEO Zhu Jiangming said its partner Leapmotor will sell EVs overseas and is in talks with other brands to license its platform.&nbsp;Abu Dhabi-based CYVN Holdings, an investor in Nio, has also reportedly built a premium EV using Nio’s chassis and software, with plans to sell under the McLaren brand.Analysts say the model resembles the “Intel Inside” campaign of the 1990s, where Chinese EV makers package chassis, batteries and software into ready-made kits for foreign manufacturers.&nbsp;The approach saves billions in R&amp;D and years of development, while providing Chinese companies with valuable licensing revenue amid a bruising domestic price war and mounting trade tensions abroad.“It is a very smart, win-win solution,” said Will Wang, general manager of Shanghai-based consultancy Autodatas. Marco Santino of Oliver Wyman added that the “firepower” of China’s fierce EV competition allows legacy carmakers to bring higher-quality products to market more quickly.But some warn of long-term risks. Ford, Toyota, Renault, Volkswagen, Audi Turn To Chinese EV Platforms — A New ‘Intel Inside’ For Cars

Global carmakers are cutting costs and years off development by licensing ready-made Chinese EV platforms, batteries and software.

Registrations of Tesla Inc. Tesla Registrations Drop 28% In Europe In March: Retail’s In Wait-And-Watch Mode

The U.S. automaker’s market share in the EU, European Free Trade Association, and the UK put together subsequently fell to 2% in March from 2.9% in the corresponding month of 2024. 

Retail sentiment for QuantumScape Corp remained neutral (50/100) on Stocktwits after the company entered into an agreement with Volkswagen Group’s battery company PowerCo to industrialize its next-generation solid-state lithium-metal battery technology. The firms believe this engagement represents the fastest way to achieve gigawatt-hour-scale production of solid-state technology to meet the growing global demand for better electric vehicle batteries.QuantumScape said the agreement supersedes an earlier joint venture between it and Volkswagen Group to co-manufacture batteries.Baird analyst Ben Kallo has expressed optimism about the deal, saying it provides royalty payments and a pathway to commercialization. The analyst believes that, given the company's work with many other car makers, additional partnership announcements may be a catalyst. The latest deal announcement comes as a relief for QuantumScape stock, which had taken a hit in January after a news report indicated that Volkswagen may be looking at other potential battery manufacturers.Meanwhile, Truist analyst Jordan Levy reportedly said their firm will be looking for more details around timelines to initial production and other milestones that still need to be cleared. Levy believes the deal shows that an essential long-term partner and largest shareholder remains supportive of the firm’s commercialization efforts.The company is scheduled to report its second-quarter earnings on July 24.
