Monopar Therapeutics Inc. ($MNPR)
Shares of Monopar skyrocketed over 350% by mid-day Thursday after the Wilmette, Illinois-based micro-cap biotech announced an agreement with AstraZeneca plc’s ($AZN) Alexion rare disease subsidiary to exclusively in-license the latter’s ALXN-1840.
The drug candidate is a Phase 3 asset and is being investigated for treating Wilson disease, a rare and progressive genetic condition in which the body’s pathway for removing excess copper is compromised.
The agreement calls upon Monopar paying an upfront cash payment and giving AstraZeneca an equity stake. The smaller biotech is also required to make regulatory and sales milestones-based future payments and royalties on future net sales.
Monopar said it will be responsible for all future development and commercialization activities.
