Chinese EV giant BYD Co. (BYDDY, BYDDF) announced on Wednesday that it delivered 396,270 new energy vehicles in September, representing a 5.5% decline from the same month in 2024.

This includes 393,060 passenger vehicles, 3,210 commercial vehicles, and 71,256 vehicles exported by the company in September.

Battery electric passenger vehicle sales numbers came in at 205,050 in September, while plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle sales came in at 188,010 units.

Overall, in the three months through the end of September (Q3), BYD sold over 1.11 million vehicles, comprising both battery electric and plug-in hybrid models. Battery electric passenger vehicle sales alone came in at 582,522 units.

Vehicle production volume in September came in at 405,554 units for the EV giant, below the 441,052 reported in September 2024. The overall production volume in Q3 was approximately 1.08 million units.

BYD is Tesla’s (TSLA) biggest rival in the EV space. However, Tesla, unlike BYD, manufactures only battery electric vehicles.

Tesla is now slated to report its third-quarter delivery numbers on Thursday. Analysts, on average, do not expect the company’s deliveries in Q3 to cross 500,000 units. Tesla’s highest quarterly delivery number of 495,570 vehicles was recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024, slightly below the 500,000 threshold.
