The&nbsp; U.S. dollar is seen extending its gains early Thursday as the relief rally set off by the Federal Reserve’s decision to take the interest rate down by a quarter-point for the first time this year continues to play out.The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), which ended Wednesday’s session up about 0.25% at 96.87 after the Fed decision, has tacked on more gains in the overnight session. At last check, the DXY was up 0.34% at $97.20, which, however, marks a 10.4% drop for the year-to-date (YTD) period.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/UUP">Invesco DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund (UUP)</a>, an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the performance of the Deutsche Bank Long US Dollar Index (USDX) Futures Index, has lost 7.5% this year. In comparison,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY)</a>, an ETF tracking the S&amp;P 500 Index, and the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/QQQ">Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ)</a> have gained 13.14% and 15.71%, respectively, for the year.On Stocktwits, retail sentiment toward the UUP ETF worsened to ‘bearish’ (40/100) from ‘neutral’ a day ago. The U.S. dollar continued to trade lower in overnight trading following a two-session retreat that began with the release of the monthly U.S. jobs data on Friday.The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the value of the greenback against a basket of currencies belonging to Washington’s major trading partners, edged down 0.06% to 97.36 late Monday. The index, which traded at 98.5 ahead of the non-farm payrolls report, has lost nearly 1% since then.The overnight low of 97.32 marks the lowest level since July 23, when it dipped to an intraday trough of 97.21.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/UUP">Invesco DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund (UUP)</a>, an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the performance of the Deutsche Bank Long US Dollar Index (USDX) Futures Index, has gained over 1% since it hit a 52-week low of $26.81 on July 1.In overnight trading, the UUP ETF was unchanged, while it has lost 7.17% year-to-date (YTD) compared to the 11.37% gain for the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY)</a> and the 13.53% advance by the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/QQQ">Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ)</a>.&nbsp;In a post on X, Gold bull and economist Peter Schiff&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/PeterSchiff/status/1965157327268708857">said</a>, “Get out of the U.S. dollar now, before it's too late. Got gold?” He based his call on a looming Fed rate cut. “Ever since Alan Greenspan rescued the stock market after the 1987 crash, the Fed has made a series of increasingly bad monetary policy mistakes,” he said.&nbsp;“But the mistake the Fed is about to make will likely be the worst yet.”On Stocktwits, retail sentiment toward the UUP ETF remained ‘bearish’ (32/100) by late Monday, but the message volume was at ‘extremely high’ levels.Last Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the economy added jobs at an anemic pace of 22,000 in August and the jobless rate climbed to the highest level since October 2021. The weak data sent rate cut bets soaring to 100%, with the CME FedWatch Tool showing that some futures traders even braced for a 50 basis point cut at the upcoming September 16-17 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting.Forex traders are likely to keenly watch the BLS’ preliminary&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bls.gov/sae/notices/2025/preliminary-benchmark-announcement-2025.htm">estimate</a> for the March 2025 annual benchmark revision, which is scheduled to be announced at 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday. The revision is done to the data from the Establishment Survey.The data used for the revision comes from the Quarterly Census of Employment And Wages (QCEW), which provides comprehensive employment counts based on state unemployment insurance (UI) tax records for the preceding March.Economists at Wall Street firms such as Wells Fargo, Comerica and Pantheon expect the BLS’s preliminary benchmark revision for the year through March 2024 to show a nearly 800,000 downward adjustment, a Bloomberg report&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-08/another-us-jobs-markdown-sets-stage-for-fed-cut-bls-criticism">said.</a> This translates to a roughly 67,000 downward revision per month, on average.&nbsp;Other firms, such as Nomura, BofA, and Royal Bank of Scotland, have put the numbers closer to one million.&nbsp;Last year, the BLS reduced the previously reported job additions for the 12-month period that ended March 2024 by 818,000. President Donald Trump&nbsp;cited this as one of the reasons for firing former BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/trump-says-biden-appointed-labor-statistics-chief-fired-over-biggest-miscalculation-in-50-years/chrX5R6RdRa">accusing</a> her of inflating the numbers to make the previous Biden administration’s economic performance appear more favorable.Another sharp downward revision would question the strength seen in the first four months of the year, when the economy added an average of 127,000 jobs. It was only since May that the number has looked bad, averaging 27,000 per month.Confirmation of a weak labor market is seen as the trigger that&nbsp;could prompt the Federal Reserve, under Jerome Powell, to announce its first rate cut this year. Morgan Stanley, which has a more conservative estimate for the annual revision (50,000 per month), said in a note released Friday that “It will be hard for markets or the Fed to ignore this signal in light of a moderating economy.”A Fed rate cut would weigh down on the dollar, given that it would decrease the appeal of investing in the U.S. and, in turn, reduce the demand for the dollar,&nbsp;which also faces pressure from lower bond yields. Billionaire investor Ray Dalio warned on Thursday that a September rate cut by the Federal Reserve, despite elevated inflation, could deepen risks of stagflation.“I fear that short-term rates and the dollar will go down, especially relative to gold, long-term interest rates will rise a bit, so the yield curve will become steeper, and stocks will do relatively poorly despite the easing,” Dalio wrote during&nbsp;a Reddit AMA responding to a question about the impact of a Fed rate cut in&nbsp;September. He added that such a shift would signal investors wanting to rotate out of debt into alternative stores of wealth. Dailo said that the move would also indicate that the Fed is “in a bind” and that the risk of stagflation was rising.The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/DXY">U.S. Dollar Index</a> (DXY) has declined by more than 2% so far this year and by nearly 10% over the past 12 months.&nbsp;On Thursday afternoon, DXY was trading up 0.2% with retail sentiment on Stocktwits trending in ‘bullish’ territory over the past day.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/GLD">SPDR Gold Shares ETF</a> (GLD) has gained 33% this year and more than 40% over the past 12 months. GLD edged 0.5% lower by Thursday afternoon, after hitting a record high of $329.45 in the previous session.The broader equities market was trading in the green with the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF</a> (SPY) up 0.55%, the&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/DIA">SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF</a> (DIA) gaining 0.74%, and the Nasdaq-100 tracking&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/QQQ">Invesco QQQ Trust</a> (QQQ) moving 0.62% higher. However, retail sentiment around QQQ on Stocktwits dipped to ‘extremely bearish’ from ‘bearish’ territory over the past day. Answering a separate question on strategist Peter Zeihan’s view that China faces an inevitable collapse within the next decade, Dalio stated he wouldn't bet on it any more than he would bet on the United States' collapse over the next decade. “I think it's not smart to place that bet because they both have big strengths and big weaknesses. Ray Dalio Warns Fed Rate Cut In September Could Trigger Stagflation Risk

The billionaire investor predicts a weaker dollar, a steeper yield curve, and stocks doing relatively poorly despite the easing.

The dollar has recouped most of its losses seen since last Friday when the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) retreated below the 98 level to a one-month low.Friday’s weakness stemmed from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's suggestion in his Jackson Hole address that a rate cut could be forthcoming at the September meeting.&nbsp;DXY was down 0.04% at $98.39 early Tuesday after it ended 0.73% higher at $98.43 on Monday. The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/UUP">Invesco DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund (UUP)</a>, meanwhile, advanced 0.80%.&nbsp;The UUP is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that provides a cost-effective and convenient way to track the value of the U.S. dollar relative to a basket of the six major world currencies:&nbsp; the euro, Japanese yen, British pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona, and Swiss franc.The dollar is likely to be choppy this week as forex traders sift through key data that has implications for the near-term interest rates. A falling interest rate environment is negative for the dollar as it reduces U.S. investment appeal among foreign investors and, in turn, tempers demand for the greenback.The weekly jobless claims data, the advance second-quarter GDP data, and the July personal income and spending report, which comprises the Fed’s favorite inflation gauge — the price consumption expenditure index — are among the data that can cause a flutter in the currency market.&nbsp;The dollar has also been facing pressure amid moves among BRICS and a few other nations to diversify their currency reserves away from the dollar and use alternative currencies for trade purposes. President Donald Trump’s tariffs have exacerbated this move.&nbsp;After starting the year at 108.53, the DXY pulled back sharply, coinciding with the announcement of Trump’s Liberation Day tariffs. Although the index recovered slightly from the lows, it came under renewed selling pressure amid the tariff uncertainty.It fell as low as 96.38 on July 1 but has mainly been seeing a consolidation move under 100.&nbsp;<img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/DXY_5_YEAR_CHART_png_3fe78e6a4e.webp" alt="DXY5-YEAR CHART.png">Source: KoyfinFor the year, the DXY has lost 9.4% and the UUP ETF about 6.36%In a report released in early August, Morgan Stanley said it expects the U.S. dollar to lose another 10% by the end of 2026. Economist Steve Hanke Warns Faith In Dollar Is Eroding, Blames It On Trump’s Weaponization Of The Greenback

Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, said on Tuesday that it’s possible that the U.S. dollar may revert to the gold standard.“History shows us that the same cycles repeat time and time again. One such cycle is related to currency devaluation,” Dalio said in a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/RayDalio/status/1952729342124962303">post</a> on X. “Once people start to lose trust in the fiat system, we see a specific cause and effect reaction occur.”A fiat currency is issued by a government and is not backed by a physical commodity like gold or silver. The U.S. and much of the world switched to fiat from the gold standard back in the 1970s. At the time, the country was facing fiscal issues due to large federal deficits resulting from the Vietnam War. According to Dalio, a switch-back may be on the cards.U.S. debt&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/5/20/the-us-has-36-trillion-in-debt-what-does-that-mean-and-who-owns-it">stands at</a> $36.2 trillion as of mid-2025, which is around 122% of the country’s annual GDP, and it has been rising rapidly.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/DXY">U.S. Dollar Index (DXY)</a> had gained 0.25% in morning trade on Tuesday, but it has dropped nearly 8.8% this year and 4.1% over the past 12 months. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around DXY remained in ‘neutral’ territory over the past day, down from ‘extremely bullish’ a month ago.&nbsp;Dalio anticipates that governments are likely to print more money and use that money to pay off their current debt. Yet it ended 2.5% higher at 98.91. This marked the fourth straight session of gains for the index, which measures the value of the U.S. dollar against a basket of the top 10 currencies.According to a Reuters&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/dollar-edges-down-snapping-four-days-gains-before-fed-meeting-2025-07-30/">report,</a> the dollar is poised to record its first month of gains in July.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/UUP">Invesco DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund (UUP)</a>, an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the Deutsche Bank U.S. Dollar Long Future Index, edged down 0.07% in Wednesday’s early premarket session. The ETF is down approximately 6.3% year-to-date.The next significant catalyst for the greenback is likely to be Wednesday’s Fed decision.
