Bitcoin is the world's first decentralized cryptocurrency, created in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It enables peer-to-peer electronic cash transactions without intermediaries like banks or governments, operating on a blockchain secured by Proof of Work mining and the SHA-256 cryptographic algorithm.   With a fixed supply cap of 21 million coins and programmatic halvings every four years that reduce miner rewards, Bitcoin is designed as a deflationary digital asset often called "digital gold." Its value stems from solving the double-spending problem without trusted intermediaries, creating the first truly scarce digital asset with censorship resistance and permissionless access that no government, corporation, or individual can control.  Bitcoin operates as a decentralized peer-to-peer network where transactions are recorded on a public ledger called the blockchain, distributed across thousands of computers globally. Transactions are grouped into blocks added approximately every 10 minutes through mining, where specialized computers compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles.   Bitcoin has achieved mainstream adoption through multiple vectors. The January 2024 SEC approval of 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs opened Bitcoin investment to traditional finance participants, and corporations like Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) are using Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset to protect against currency debasement, offering MSTR holders amplified exposure to Bitcoin.   The Bitcoin ecosystem continues to evolve with innovations like Ordinals, which emerged in January 2023 to enable NFT-like functionality directly on Bitcoin, and BRC-20 tokens, an experimental standard for creating fungible tokens using Ordinal inscriptions. BTCFi (Bitcoin Finance) represents emerging financial applications extending beyond Bitcoin's traditional role, with protocols like Babylon allowing Bitcoin holders to stake BTC to secure Proof of Stake chains.

Bitcoin is experiencing a significant downturn, prompting intense community debate over whether current levels mark a bottom, as widespread discussions also involve controversial allegations linking the cryptocurrency to illicit activities and concerns over institutional liquidations.

Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. The cryptocurrency was down nearly 3% to $73,503 on Wednesday, having declined more than 26% over the past year and around 16% so far in 2026.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Banks Vs Stablecoins</h2>The Trump administration has pushed for a broader adoption of dollar-pegged tokens, having signed a law establishing a federal regulatory framework for stablecoins last year. At the time of writing, Bitcoin fell 4.1% to $73,353, more than $1000 below and its lowest since Trump took office for a second term, just over a year ago. The previous lowest was $74,425 recorded on April 7, according to Bloomberg.

CoinGlass&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.coinglass.com/liquidations">showed</a> around $306 million in liquidations over the past day, with an even split across long bets and short positions being wiped out. Crypto Traders Are ‘Buying The Dip’ After Weekend Flash Crash, Shows Poll

According to an ongoing poll on Stocktwits, nearly 50% of crypto traders said they were buying the dip.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>The company’s shares closed down nearly 10% on Monday, for a fifth straight session of losses and for their worst day since November.</li><li>Robinhood UK on Monday said it was launching a stocks &amp; shares ISA and would offer zero platform fees, commissions, and FX fees, along with a 2% cash bonus.</li><li>Mizuho said this launch is a major positive catalyst for Robinhood's international expansion.</li></ul>Shares of Robinhood Markets Inc. rose marginally after the bell on Monday in a sigh of relief for investors after Cathie Wood’s ARK Investment Management scooped up more than 360,000 shares of the fintech play, loading up on its small buy from last week.The company’s shares closed down nearly 10% on Monday, marking a fifth consecutive session of losses and their worst single-day performance since November. The shares settled at $89.91, their lowest closing level since June of last year. Robinhood stock reached an all-time high of $152.46 in October but has since fallen about 35% from that level.Robinhood’s shares have now traded below the $100 level for two straight sessions,&nbsp;failing to gain traction despite several potentially supportive developments. These include the company securing a key role in so-called “Trump accounts,” optimism around the potential SpaceX initial public offering, expansion into new business lines, and CEO Vlad Tenev highlighting efforts to simplify trading and&nbsp;avoid a repeat of the disruptions seen during&nbsp;the 2021 meme-stock crisis.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Cathie Wood’s investment</h2>On Monday, ARK bought a total of 363,317 shares of Robinhood, with 235,077 shares purchased by its ARKK ETF and 64,282 shares purchased by its ARKW ETF, according to the <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/ArkkDaily/status/2018493257894752672?s=20">Ark Invest Tracker</a> on X. Another 63,958 shares were bought by ARKF ETF.Wood’s ARKF purchased 19,376 shares of Robinhood on Friday as well. In January alone, Robinhood’s share decline 12%, primarily&nbsp;due to a partial hit from Bitcoin’s prices constantly declining, making it a lucrative stock to buy for many.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Another Positive Catalyst</h2>Robinhood on Monday said it was launching a stocks &amp; shares ISA to bring its low-cost, intuitive investing experience to the UK. This would combine zero platform fees, commissions, low FX fees, and a 2% cash bonus, with Robinhood noting that customers can earn 2% back on new eligible ISA contributions when they fund their account before April 5.Robinhood said that ISAs are the UK’s most widely used long-term savings vehicle, yet many investors remain deterred by high fees, complex transfers, and outdated platforms.
