Citi No Longer Sees Bitcoin Hitting Record High This Year – Cuts Ethereum Outlook by Over $1,000

Citigroup lowered its 12-month price targets for Bitcoin and Ethereum, expecting both to remain below their historical highs.

It remains nearly 40% below its record high of over $126,000 seen in October, but has recovered nearly 17% from its February bottom of $60,000.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Where Is Bitcoin’s Price Headed Next?</h2>Bitcoin’s price has been range-bound for most of February and March so far. Data on CoinGlass&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.coinglass.com/liquidations">showed</a> that a&nbsp;breakout in either direction could trigger a chain reaction of&nbsp;liquidations.&nbsp;A breakout beyond the $75,000 range could open the door for further upside if short liquidations add buying pressure. The two agencies had different rulebooks for the same asset class.Big banks, large investors, and others didn’t participate in the cryptocurrency market due to the regulatory uncertainty. The MOU between the SEC and CFTC ends the all-out war, following the passage of the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/genius-act-stablecoins-could-result-in-banking-boom-says-white-house/cZduGn4RI9d">GENIUS Act</a> last year and the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/banks-need-clarity-act-more-than-crypto-industry-says-former-cftc-chair/cZdVBLzRI46">CLARITY Act</a> expected to pass this year.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Does The SEC, CFTC MOU Actually Mean?</h2>The MOU between the SEC and CFTC essentially&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://t.co/SxHzqQR0GE">outlined</a> how the two sides are going to cooperate going forward. The primary goal is to build a dedicated framework for crypto assets. This includes regular meetings to discuss emerging regulatory issues before they become problems, as well as real-time data sharing on specific incidents, events, and market activity.When it comes to oversight, they will coordinate on cross-market surveillance and joint examinations. Staff in both agencies will be trained on the other’s jurisdiction. Paul Atkins Envisions SEC-CFTC ‘Super App’ Model After Two Sides ‘Bury The Hatchet’ On Crypto

The SEC and CFTC signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at coordinating regulation of the cryptocurrency market.

Kaiko data showed commodities, foreign exchange, equities, and other traditional assets now account for about 24% of contracts on on-chain derivatives markets, up from just 10% in January.“This doubling of non-crypto market share demonstrates growing demand for traditional asset exposure through crypto-native infrastructure,” Fraussen told Stocktwits in an email.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Hyperliquid Wins In Bear And Bull Markets</h2>According to Aurelie Barthere, Principal Research Analyst at Nansen, most altcoins continue to behave as higher-beta extensions of Bitcoin. If the broader crypto market stabilizes, altcoins could outperform on the upside. However, they are also likely to fall more sharply if Bitcoin weakens.Nansen noted that the platform stands out because it allows trading across a broader range of assets, including real-world commodities. More importantly, for Bitcoin, the Federal Reserve has printed money every time there’s been a conflict in the region.“That’s what they do, they’ve done it for every other major Middle Eastern conflict, at least in my lifetime,” Hayes said.
