The survey publishes weekly averages for products such as 30-year and 15-year fixed mortgages, based on loan applications submitted nationwide.<h2 class="st-heading-2">How Lenders Set Mortgage Rates</h2>While Freddie Mac’s Mortgage rates serve as a benchmark, lenders set mortgage rates based on their own funding costs, risks, and the prevailing economic landscape. One major influence is the yield on long-term Treasury securities, which serves as a reference for the available risk-free rate.Lenders compare the return on home loans with returns on long-term government bonds. When Treasury yields rise, which is itself affected by factors like the prevailing fed funds rate and fiscal health, lenders usually raise mortgage rates.A borrower’s individual rate also depends on credit score, down payment, loan type, and other extra costs. Lenders charge higher rates when they perceive more risk. While the PMMS gives a national view of rates on conforming loans, the actual offers borrowers receive can differ widely across lenders.<h2 class="st-heading-2">The Fed’s Influence: What Rate Cuts Really Change</h2>The U.S. central bank does not set mortgage rates, but its monetary policy influences how much homebuyers pay. The Fed sets the federal funds rate, which is the rate at which banks lend to each other overnight. In the near term, the company plans to develop a modified version of the Starlink satellite to serve as a foundation for building data centers in space.<h2 class="st-heading-2">IPO Talks</h2>Wall Street has been buzzing this week after reports emerged that SpaceX is planning to go public at an eye-watering valuation of around $1.5 trillion, making it the biggest IPO in history.SpaceX and its advisers are working toward a potential listing window in mid- to late 2026. However, market conditions could push the deal into 2027, according to a Bloomberg report, citing people familiar with the matter.The faster path to public markets reflects the expansion of Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, which now supports more than eight million active users across a roughly 9,000-satellite constellation. SpaceX revenue could reportedly reach $15 billion in 2025 and climb to $22 billion–$24 billion in 2026, with Starlink contributing most of the growth.<h2 class="st-heading-2">EchoStar Climbs</h2>Satellite communications stock EchoStar jumped over 11% on Wednesday after the potential SpaceX valuation emerged. The company’s exposure to SpaceX followed its September agreement to sell its AWS-4 and H-block spectrum licenses to SpaceX. As part of the deal, EchoStar got $8.5 billion in SpaceX stock. At the time of the deal, SpaceX was valued at about $400 billion. EchoStar got another $2.6 billion in SpaceX stock by selling more spectrum in November.Firefly Aerospace, a much smaller competitor of SpaceX, also rose nearly 9.5%. Wall Street has been buzzing this week after reports emerged that SpaceX is planning to go public at an eye-watering valuation of around $1.5 trillion.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Its revenue of $472.5 million surpassed estimates of $465 million, aided by its BlueHalo acquisition.</li><li>The company said it saw an unfavorable service product mix and an unfavorable product mix, partially due to the government shutdown.</li><li>While estimates may still need further resetting, strong budget tailwinds in drones, directed energy, and laser communications support a favorable medium-term setup, Cantor analysts said.</li></ul>Drone maker AeroVironment’s stock fell nearly 9% in early trading on Wednesday after the company’s fiscal second-quarter profit missed analysts’ expectations. &nbsp;The firm reported adjusted earnings of $0.44 per share, below Wall Street’s estimate of $0.79 per share, according to Fiscal.ai data. Its revenue of $472.5 million came in ahead of an estimated $465 million, aided by its BlueHalo acquisition.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Shutdown Weighs</h2>The company said it saw an unfavorable service product mix and an unfavorable product mix, partially as a result of the government shutdown, which delayed service revenue and orders. Its net loss for the second quarter of fiscal 2026 was $17.1 million, or $0.34 per share, compared with net income of $7.5 million, or $0.27 per diluted share, in the prior-year period, due to intangible amortization and other related non-cash purchase accounting expenses.“While this quarter presented challenges in terms of the U.S. government shutdown and our transition to new operational systems, we are very pleased with the continued business momentum,” said Chief Financial Officer Kevin McDonnell.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Did Cantor Analysts Say?</h2>As per TheFly, Cantor Fitzgerald cut its price target on AeroVironment to $315 from $335, while maintaining an ‘Overweight’ rating. AeroVironment would likely trade lower in the near term after missing Street earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and free cash flow expectations, though the pullback may be brief, the analyst told investors in a research note.While estimates may still need further resetting, strong budget tailwinds in drones, directed energy, and laser communications support a favorable medium-term setup, provided cash flow concerns and fears of large-scale M&amp;A unwind do not escalate, the firm added.For fiscal year 2026, AeroVironment projected revenue of between $1.95 billion and $2.0 billion. Notably, defense firms are banking on a surge in military investment worldwide amid heightened geopolitical tensions. However, its gross margin dipped to 29.8% from 30.4%.“Chewy continues to outperform the pet category and expand market share, with profits once again growing faster than sales,” said Chewy CEO Sumit Singh.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Weak Q4 Earnings Forecast</h2>The company forecast adjusted earnings between $0.24 and $0.27 per share for the fourth quarter, while analysts expected $0.29 per share, according to Fiscal.ai data. For example, in March 2020, before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the FOMC slashed interest rates by 1.5 percentage points in total across two unscheduled meetings.In each meeting, the governors are presented with recent economic data, financial market conditions, and forecasts covering inflation, employment, production, credit, and other macroeconomic factors.After carefully reviewing all the data points, FOMC members discuss policy options and vote on monetary policy, primarily by setting the target range for the federal funds rate, the rate at which banks lend overnight to each other.When a simple majority of Fed members agrees on a specific rate, the committee sets the mandate for the Fed that conducts open-market operations, such as buying or selling government securities, to align market interest rates with the intended target. Exxon CEO Darren Woods said the updated plan reflects lasting improvements in the company's operations.“We are more profitable than we were five years ago, and we expect that to continue as the advantages we’ve unlocked position us for even greater opportunities in the years ahead,” he said.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Permian, Guyana To Lead Production Gains</h2>Exxon also raised its 2030 production target. It now expects to produce 5.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd), slightly higher than its previous estimate. A large chunk of the increase will come from the prolific Permian Basin, where the company believes output can reach 2.5 million boepd by the end of the decade, compared with its prior goal of 2.3 million.It also expects output to rise in Guyana, where it hopes to bring new projects online. Earnings from the upstream business are projected to climb by more than $14 billion from 2030.Exxon said it is using artificial intelligence to determine drilling routes and cut costs across its operations. In the Permian, the company now expects its supply cost to be about $30 a barrel, roughly $5 lower than its earlier estimate.The oil major expects earnings to grow about 13% per year through 2030, with strong cash-flow gains and even faster per-share growth supported by ongoing buybacks. They guarantee most of the country’s home loans and play a big part in making mortgages easier and cheaper to obtain.For decades, they operated as private, shareholder-owned companies under federal oversight. However, the situation changed during the 2008 financial crisis, when both were placed into government conservatorship. They’re still controlled by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), even as Washington debates what their future should look like.Those discussions resurfaced recently after former President Donald Trump said he is giving “very serious consideration” to taking the companies public again.<h2 class="st-heading-2">How Do They Work?</h2>The core job of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is to buy mortgages from lenders such as banks, mortgage companies, and credit unions. They either keep those loans or bundle them into mortgage-backed securities (MBS) that investors can buy. When lenders sell mortgages to the GSEs, they get cash back, which they can use to make new loans.This recycling of capital helps keep mortgage funding flowing and supports the widespread availability of the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, a product not commonly found in many other countries.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Key Differences Between Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac</h2>Though their missions are similar, the two were established at different times and with subtle market differences. Fannie Mae was created in 1938 to enhance mortgage lending during the Great Depression. Freddie Mac followed in 1970 to broaden the secondary market and increase competition.Historically, Fannie Mae has worked more with large commercial banks, while Freddie Mac has sourced more loans from smaller regional banks and credit unions. Fannie's portfolio tends to focus more on single-family homes, whereas Freddie has a more extended history of buying loans tied to multi-unit properties. Regardless of the difference, only loans that meet strict GSE standards, known as conforming loans, qualify for their guarantee.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Is Implicit Guarantee?</h2>For years, investors assumed that if Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac ever ran into trouble, the U.S. government would step in. That unspoken belief, known as the “implicit guarantee,” proved true in 2008 when the Treasury provided about $190 billion to rescue both firms. They paid back those funds by 2014, but they remain under conservatorship, with strict oversight of their capital and dividends.How and when the GSEs might leave government control remain open questions.
