Oil Slips As Investor Concerns Grow Around US Economy

Boeing (BA) CEO Kelly Ortberg said that the company is still running behind schedule in the certification process of the newest model of its long-haul 777 family.The stock slipped 3.3% on Thursday, the seventh successive day of decline. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) said late Thursday that operations at its gigantic mine in Indonesia remain suspended as it continues to search for seven workers trapped inside the giant Indonesian complex.The miner said “extensive efforts” are ongoing to clear access routes to the service level of the Grasberg mine, where the seven contractors were working at the time of a mud flow incident on Monday. Freeport added that it requires additional time to safely remove the significant amount of material in the service level, a non-mining area.“We are continuing to do everything possible to locate these individuals,” Freeport Chair Richard Adkerson and CEO Kathleen Quirk said in a statement. Indonesian government authorities are also working with the Freeport team to review the incident and monitor rescue operations.Grasberg is one of the largest copper and gold mines in the world and Freeport’s crown jewel. Major cryptocurrencies were on track to post weekly gains on Friday as investors prepared for a potential rate cut by the Federal Reserve.Bitcoin was up 1.3% to $115,434 over the past 24 hours at the time of writing, while Ether was up 2.5% to $4,521.29 and XRP advanced 1.9% to $3.05. Among other tokens, Solana gained 7.1% to $237.77, and Dogecoin was up 4.6%.After a tepid start to the month, digital tokens have seen a surge in investments as a growing number of companies are adding cryptocurrencies to their balance sheets. Robinhood Markets Inc.’s stock (HOOD) rose marginally in extended trading on Thursday after the company’s total platform assets soared above $300 billion in August.The rapidly evolving retail trading platform has been in the spotlight over the past few weeks with numerous product launches, expanding presence in international markets, and news of its stock being inducted into a key benchmark index.On Thursday, Robinhood said total assets on its platform reached $304 billion at the end of August, supported by $4.8 billion in net deposits during the month, equal to a 19% annualized growth rate.The company reported 26.7 million funded accounts, though growth was offset by the required closure of about 180,000 low-balance accounts. Over the past year, net deposits totaled $61.6 billion, up 43% from August 2024.Trading activity included $199.2 billion in equity volumes, 195.5 million options contracts, and $28.1 billion in crypto trading across Robinhood’s app and its Bitstamp exchange. Margin balances stood at $12.5 billion, while customer cash sweep balances reached $34.1 billion. Boeing (BA) stock edged higher in premarket trading on Thursday after the company reached a tentative deal with striking union members to end a five-week-long strike.The stock has been on a six-day losing streak and fell around 0.9% to $227.52 in the previous session, remaining slightly below its 52-week high of $242.69.As per the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, workers are expected to vote on the five-year contract on Friday.Over 3,200 Boeing workers with the IAM union in St. Louis and St. Charles in Missouri, and Mascoutah, Illinois, went on strike in August after rejecting a modified four-year labor agreement.
